Baffles, anti-cavitation plates ?

[edit]

I saw advertised years ago a type of ball valve that had longitudinal plates in the ball bore. They were perforated and if only some of the slots were exposed on partial opering the fluid would have to flow into the exposed slot and then through the perforated baffles and out the opposire side from the distant exposed slot.

I seem to remember that the purpose of the bafles was to prevent cavitation or water hammer or allow some easier measure of flow control.

I had a quick picture search and found some patents, looks like there are a number of design ideas out there and the use cases vary.
