Christchurch Rivers
[edit]The text referred to the Heathcote River as "the other main Christchurch river". I have changed this, as Christchurch has in fact three main rivers, the third one being the Styx River. Let me know if there is disagreement or support with this statement. Schwede66 (talk) 23:23, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Avon River (Canterbury) → Avon River / Ōtākaro – Noticed that an attempt to move this without a discussion was made a couple years ago and reverted, wanted to request a relook at this. The name 'Avon River' is already generic, with 21 rivers on the disambiguation page, including another one in a neighbouring region of New Zealand. Renaming to Avon River / Ōtākaro would not only reflect the official name of the river (which has been the dual name since the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998), but would also help to distinguish the river from others also named Avon across the world. Doing so would also better align with other dual name articles of NZ places, such as Whakaari / White Island, Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill, and Aoraki / Mount Cook, as well as the associated naming conventions for New Zealand place names. The dual name would reflect the official name according to the New Zealand Place Names register and international sources, such as the US NGA's place name register. Ōtākaro has also received a large amount of use to refer to the river and surrounding area, especially in the wake of the earthquakes which hit Christchurch. This includes by libraries and multiple businesses, in the names of cycleways along the river, and in multiple regeneration efforts relating to the river corridor. Renaming the article would better reflect the current perception of the river and contemporary naming conventions within New Zealand. Turnagra (talk) 04:27, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support Indeed, as someone who lives in Christchurch, I can say that the use of Ōtākaro for the river has become so frequent that the dual name has reached WP:COMMONNAME status. Schwede66 05:18, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Support Consistent with naming conventions and New Zealand Place Names register Somej (talk) 09:03, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
