Just read though both articles you linked and Matthew's Wikipedia page and I would argue that neither material has been copied or even paraphrased on this page. But this is still a good message for future contributions. Spilia4 (talk) 03:12, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace

[edit]

For the last few months now Matthews' birthplace has been listed as San Francisco, based solely on one ESPN article, in contrast to a wealth of other sources that say he's from Scottsdale, Arizona. Discounting the fact that ESPN has a recently poor track record regarding hockey, I don't feel that this should be taken as the definite source seeing how it contradicts nearly every other source on Matthews, and since then no one has come forth to corroborate the San Francisco claim. So I'm suggesting that it be discounted and his birthplace be reverted back to say Scottsdale. Kaiser matias (talk) 01:55, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What about San Ramon, California? GoodDay (talk) 01:29, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the Arizona change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ljk3000 (talkcontribs) 01:52, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As much as I'd love to see it changed to Scottsdale since it shows how unique his journey has been, it doesn't make sense. Elite Prospects, a notable and legit website, also lists his birthplace as San Ramon. The most credible source is The Hockey News, which puts his birth in San Ramon in every issue Matthews has been featured in. No sources list his birthplace as San Francisco besides ESPN (But San Fran is just a bit south of San Ramon so it's a simple mistake, possibly was used for familiarity as San Fransico is much more famous). Spilia4 (talk) 03:05, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This source is already included in the article and everything is explained there – Born in San Ramon, Calif., and raised in Scottsdale, Ari., Matthews...Sabbatino (talk) 17:51, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just reverted an IP edit that changed his birthplace in the infobox to Arizona, and subsequently did a quick google search looking for further verification, and sure enough, there's now conflicting sources even from NHL.com via the Leafs. There's the link above Sabbatino referenced when it was noted on draft day he was born in San Ramon. But his actual player profile on NHL.com says Scottsdale. So, do these two conflicting NHL.com sources cancel each other out? I'm also seeing google results from major news publications saying both things. This is probably going to keep happening as long as there are conflicting sources out there. Echoedmyron (talk) 22:33, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Echoedmyron: It has been quite a while since your post, but I want to clarify the situation. NHL's website is known to list "hometown" under the "birthplace" field. It is not the first time that they do this. One of the examples is Patrick Marleau and NHL claims that he was born in Aneroid, Saskatchewan when he was in fact born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan as there was no and there still is no hospital in Aneroid. I assume many websites write what NHL writes, which is wrong, and they do not take time to research certain facts. – Sabbatino (talk) 13:00, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lead Image

[edit]

This page could really use an Image of Auston Matthews in a Toronto Maple Leafs uniform, ideally as the lead image, would add myself however I don't have any images of my own, and don't want to infringe on any Copyright images from the web. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.227.127.250 (talk) 16:56, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

While that is obviously ideal, as you noted we can't just take a copyrighted image and put it there, so have to wait for someone to take a photo and upload it. Fortunately we have several people who do so, and while no one got an image of Matthews this year, it will certainly happen soon as he's an important figure. So don't worry, it'll happen, just takes some time. Kaiser matias (talk) 22:49, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Age

[edit]

Matthews was born in 1997 on September 17 which would make him 21 but his age is still at 20. AnonymousFixer (talk) 00:36, 18 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take this one on, will post review as soon as possible. Kosack (talk) 14:06, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Initial review

Lead

[edit]
  • Is there a reason ref 1 is in the lead and not the main body? Refs are generally avoided in the lead, only the town names don't feature in the main text which is a bit odd.

Early life

[edit]
  • No need to link Mexico, per WP:OVERLINK.
  • "taking in a Phoenix Coyotes Game against the Washington Capitals where he would view" > where he witnessed?
  • "his incredible hand-eye coordination made him an excellent hitter", where is this observation coming from? Is it a quote? If so it needs attributing.

Junior

[edit]
  • "set by Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane", star is a bit of a WP:PEACOCK term.
  • Second paragraph is unsourced.

Switzerland

[edit]
  • Last sentence of this section is unsourced.

Toronto Maple Leafs

[edit]
  • "Matthews had been widely expected to go first overall for over a year leading up to the event, consistently topping prospect charts and major scouting reporters", what sources are supporting this?
  • "It is widely expected that first overall selections, as well as any other highly touted early draft picks, receive the maximum entry-level compensation under the NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement." Same as above.

2016–17

[edit]
  • "his historic accomplishments", historic also seems a bit like a peacock term. Accomplisments is probably sufficient.
  • "He was the first Maple Leafs' rookie to receive the trophy in 50 years after Brit Selby in 1966.", since Brit Selby?
  • Last sentence is unsourced.

2017–18

[edit]
  • "with 34 goals and average over one point per game", average > averaged?
  • Last sentence is unsourced.

2018–19

[edit]
  • Last paragraph is unsourced.

International play

[edit]
  • Second paragraph is partly unsourced.

Personal life

[edit]
  • Last sentence of the first paragraph is unsourced.

References

[edit]
  • There are a few available authors missing from the references, I notice 3, 5, 6, 11, 13, 15 and 16 from the first 20. Seems to be less of an issue after this but make sure that all references are complete where possible.
  • Refs 25, 52 and 53 link NHL while others don't,
  • Publishing date (as well as an author) missing from ref 58.
  • Ref 73 is a bare url.

Overall, a nice article, detailed and well written. A bit of an issue with sourcing in some areas but this should be relatively simple to fix. Placed on hold while the above issues are addressed. Kosack (talk) 15:47, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Lafayette Baguette:, it's been over a week now since this review. I notice you did seem to start making some changes, do you intend to complete the review? Kosack (talk) 05:50, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's been two weeks since the initial review and there seems to be no activity on this one. I'll close this tomorrow unless we start making progress. Kosack (talk) 16:25, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Failing this for now due to the lack of activity. It's not a long way away which is a shame but if the obvious issues above are fixed, this should be relatively straight forward if you wish to re-nominate in future. Kosack (talk) 11:23, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kosack: I was entirely unaware this was a GAN. If I were to fix it and renominate, would you consider a re-review? dannymusiceditor oops 17:17, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DannyMusicEditor: Yeah of course, drop me a line when you nominate again. Kosack (talk) 19:06, 6 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kosack: excluding the formatting of the references, the actions you've requested are nearing completion. Just making sure, are you still game to re-review? dannymusiceditor oops 22:12, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DannyMusicEditor: Yeah no problem, drop me a line when it's listed again and I'll pick it back up. Kosack (talk) 06:35, 7 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DannyMusicEditor:

I saw that an initial review was done. Is the original reviewer going to review? Otherwise, I'm happy to review as the article it's almost there. Here's what I have to say:

Lead

  • "Playing baseball and hockey growing up" - perhaps rephrase it to "After playing baseball and hockey during his childhood, he developed.."
  • "first player in modern NHL history" - do we need to be specific? When is modern - since 1980?
Let's put it this way - the last time this happened, it was the first game in league history (1917).
  • Could we merge the last 2 paragraphs?
  • Could we change the lead image to a more clearer one - like the one used in the international play infobox?
I don't blame you for thinking that way at first since you are from a country where the sport is not popular, but I think in most cases the way it goes with NHL players on Wikipedia is that pictures of them in an NHL uniform are preferable to those showing the subjects in another league or an international tournament unless there is a clear, grossly noticeable difference in quality for the two images. The picture shown was taken by a skilled photographer and avid Penguins fan who has gone and taken many pictures of players who both did and did not play for his favorite team (the Leafs were visiting them here) and subsequently uploaded them here. Since this is the only available free image of Matthews in a Leafs uniform at this time, and it is of good quality, I believe it is fine as it is. I would be willing to debate this and even take a second opinion if you'd like me to.

Early life

  • "witnessing a Phoenix Coyotes Game against the Washington Capitals where he witnessed" - 'witness' used twice, why not "where he saw"?
  • "When Matthews was younger" - don't need to state this, this is still the early life section.
  • "According to his father, baseball was his best sport; [...] However, he hated the slow pace of the game, preferring [..] hockey." - is there a source for this? Otherwise needs removing.

Toronto Maple Leafs

  • "Although Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello had been very open over his disapproval of [...] Lamoriello had previously been involved in a contract dispute while with the New Jersey Devils with [...] over the issue of bonuses; there were no bonus clauses included in Larsson's entry-level contract." - is that in the source?

2016-17

  • this paragraph is too big. Consider splitting into two.
  • "shot on goal to start a career" - perhaps add a wiki link to Shot on goal (ice hockey)

2018–19

  • "In so doing, he became the youngest player in NHL history" - 'in so doing' sounds odd. Perhaps "As a result"?
  • "Matthews became only the fifth player in the modern era to record ten goals" - can we be specific, source says 1943/44?
  • "In so doing, he became the first Maple Leaf to score at least 30 goals" - 'in so doing' sounds odd. Perhaps "As a result"?

International play

  • "leading the tournament in scoring and being named MVP" - what does MVP mean?
  • "Americans defeated Sweden" - United States beat, not 'Americans'?
  • "during which he led the Americans in scoring" - perhaps 'led the team to victory', sounds better?
  • top line with Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid. - add wiki links to their Wikipedia articles

Personal life

  • "spending most of his time telecommuting from Arizona"
  • "though they talked over the phone daily"
  • "She typically cooked him breakfast and dinner, with lunch usually being a team affair occurring after a practice"
  • "and received homework help from his sister while in Switzerland"
  • All of the above - too much information. We should protect their privacy; plus it's not really important/relevant detail.
  • "Thanks to his mother's heritage" - rephrase that, perhaps "due to"?
  • Avoid one line paragraphs - try to merge some together

I may have some minor changes that I'll make myself. Overall the article is mostly well-written (once the above has been addressed!). Appears to be broad, neutral and stable. There are sufficient inline citations and sources. No copyright violations detected. Well-illustrated with images, with captions and appropriate copyright tags. I hope this review is useful, thanks Lizzy (talk 19:08, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I will not be able to give this article serious attention until Friday at earliest, if not then, maybe not until Monday. Will try to get it done before Christmas, but because I also have To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere on review, this may be on the back burner for a moment. Just know that I absolutely intend to get this done very very soon and there's no way this slips past December. dannymusiceditor oops 06:16, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Listen, I'm sorry I haven't touched this yet, but it's my full intention to finish it now. I'm sorry if this slips a few hours into the new year. I'll get a few out of the way right away, and have the rest in a few hours. Hockey is the greatest, dannymusiceditor oops 02:34, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lizzy150: I have done these to the best of my ability. I did my best to finish this on my mobile device before I set foot aboard a ship for a cruise. As a result, the edit where I added a reference still has a bare URL (the one about Adam Larsson). If I could get some help formatting that, that would be great, otherwise I believe we should be good to go. dannymusiceditor oops 17:30, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making the changes. I've done a quick read again and fixed a few things. Enjoy your cruise. Now passing. Just Lizzy(talk) 19:46, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
