Wider movement
[edit]There were a lot of these Associations. They appear to have been created in many cities and notably in the north and Scotland which includes the one that became the Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women. Stills its a great start! Maybe in time we need one for this in Oxford and then another about this movement. Victuallers (talk) 13:18, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Victuallers:, I actually had a draft for this half-written as KateCook created a couple of redlinks to AEW in July. It turned out that Association for the Higher Education of Women is currently a redirect to Queen Margaret College (Glasgow). I would be interested to know how much (inter)national cooperation there was as the Oxford AEW seems to have been dominated by dons and their wives, at least initially. Coordinates
[edit]@The Anome: thanks or tagging the article with coordinates needed, I have added the coordinates of the Clarendon Building where the AEW had its offices. Is there anything else I need to do to make the information clearer if it is imported by other sites? Perhaps the article needs an infobox and year established and year disestablished categories. Article name
[edit]I have reverted a move to Association for Promoting the Higher Education of Women by SharqHabib as I think any move should be discussed first. Various variants of the organisation's name have been used, so I may support a move following a discussion. TSventon (talk) 18:12, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
- It seems to be simultaneously both: Batson Her Oxford(2008) has both names and the helpful comment that it is "the Association for Promoting... commonly known as the AEW", Vera Brittain The Women at Oxford (1960) has AEW (or Association for Education of Women) throughout and cites their reports in her bibliography under the title Reports of the AEW. Oddly on following those up, I find the original records of the Association on Google Books under AEW, but their calendar under APEW! Their papers at the Bodleian are however just under AEW (https://archives.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/repositories/2/resources/2928). Brockliss (2016) goes with Promoting, both are listed in the Handbook to the University Oxford (1946), the OU Gazette of 1922 has just Association as does the Handbook of 1913 - so I wonder if the name changed at some point? KateCook (talk) 13:27, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- I am hoping to be able to check on name changes once the AEW Annual Reports 1879-1920 (ANN/AEW 1/1) go online at https://www.firstwomenatoxford.ox.ac.uk/collections. TSventon (talk) 15:07, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Former women's universities and colleges category
[edit]Omnis Scientia I see that you removed Category:Former women's universities and colleges in the United Kingdom. I think that the category is useful as in its early days the AEW organised the teaching of women students at Oxford and supervised the women's halls and the home students. I am happy to discuss further if necessary. TSventon (talk) 14:30, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- @TSventon, from what I understood, it oversaw lectures at women's colleges. Strictly speaking, I wouldn't say its a university or college in its own right like the rest of the schools and colleges in the category were. Hence why I removed it. Maybe if there is a "Defunct women's organization" category, it would fit in better there. Omnis Scientia (talk) 14:37, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
