Suppressing information

[edit]

In this series of edits, Raks2105 (talk · contribs) deleted information about Shetty's role in the film Telikeda Bolli, stating in the edit summary:

officially handled by Ashrita Shettys PR team..edited information wishes to be kept personal

Since the information is cited, and is not in any way negative, I see no reason to suppress it. Shetty's personal wishes in this regard are somewhat irrelevant; Wikipedia article subjects to not get to control the contents of the articles about them. See WP:OWN. Ethnicity

[edit]

@TuluveRai123: The actress herself said in the interview that she is a Kannadiga here. Perhaps bring an interview of her instead of links in which the subject is called a Tulu by the news agency? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:29, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I want you to understand that people who are born in or from Karnataka are called Kannadigas. The editor has mentioned in this way. Please don't hide our Tuluva identity and kill Tulu culture!! TuluveRai123 (talk) 09:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TuluveRai123: We write what is written in the reliable sources. If the subject herself has said that she is a Kannadiga with quotes (not the editor), we would should write it as its is per WP:OR policy. Pinging @Ab207, Ravensfire, Sid95Q, Kailash29792, Arjayay, and Tayi Arajakate: for suggestions. Also refrain from these comments → "Please don't hide our Tuluva identity and kill Tulu culture". It gies against WP:CIVIL and is a blockable offense. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:51, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also pinging @RegentsPark:. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 10:02, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
TuluveRai123, I agree there is a chance that Tulus are mistakenly identified as Kannadigas. This is partly because Kannadiga may refer to both an ethnicity and a demonym, or at times ignorance of the part of the interviewer. But crying foul won't help, please bring any authentic source/interview in any language which explicitly identifies Ms Shetty as a Tulu. -- Ab207 (talk) 13:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ab207: TuluveRai123 did bring a Deccan Herald source while reverting me, but the source writes → ..Pandey had entered into wedlock with Tamil and Tulu actress Ashrita Shetty in December.... As you can see it refers to the industries in question not her ethnicity. Even then an interview would carry more weight than a source that mentions her ethnicity. I'd be open to a paraphrasing → "Shetty in a 2013 interview with The Hindu said that she is a Kannadiga" based on this quote from the interview → Though I am a South Indian (Kannadiga), I didn’t know much about Tamil cinema. So as to shift the attribution to the subject of the article. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 13:40, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Especially with a WP:BLP article, ethnicity (like religion) can be a very challenging area. The general rule is to include that information when the article subject makes a declaration about it and then go with what they say. In this case, it sounds like Shetty has said they are Kannadiga, so barring something else from them, that's how our article should read. Ravensfire (talk) 14:14, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think we can simply say "born in a South Indian family" or "born in a family from Karnataka" using the same source as a working solution. This would comply with WP:NOR since won't mention Tulu, and WP:WIKIVOICE as its an "uncontested and uncontroversial factual assertion". -- Ab207 (talk) 14:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I tried searching for if there is any source which describes her as Tulu and haven't been able to find one. The systemic bias against linguistic minorities such as Tulu, Kodava, etc in Karnataka is an issue but there should be some source which describes her as a Tulu if not her own statement, so I think the current wording (describing her as a Kannadiga) is the way to go for the time being at least. Tayi Arajakate Talk 16:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I will agree with what Ab207 said we could write in the article "born in a South Indian family" or "born in family from Karnataka" TuluveRai123 (talk) 02:38, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
