Redirects here

I've redirected Jazz Messengers here, because apart from the brief period when Silver was in the group, the Jazz Messengers were just a name for Art Blakey's backing band.

"Sympathetic"

"he is often considered to be Monk's most sympathetic drummer": What does it mean to be a sympathetic drummer?
-Taco325i 14:13, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Monk had very definite ideas about what he wanted a drummer to do, and how the band should treat the rhythm of his compositions (some of the dancing on stage was to get the band to play in the rhythm he wanted). I've read a couple of pieces saying that he felt Blakey was one of the few drummers who instinctively knew what he wanted without having to be instructed. I'll try to find a reference.

Thanks for the very thorough answer, I learned something new today.

When WP is working at its best, these personal increases of insight are sources of directions to edit in. In this case, the occasion of the question is a more or less cryptic use of the word "sympathetic". Besides the need to come up with the sources (i did convert an "OR" tag into a "fact" one), there probably should be a lk on the word. I doubt (but what do i know about jazz!) that we should have a Sympathy in jazz article, but perhaps there is a section in Jazz, or one of the articles that it links to which are specific to the nature of jazz, that explains this kind of collegiality using the word (or perhaps mentioning the word would improve the article). In that case, IMO a link coded as [[Characteristics of jazz#Collegiality|sympathy]] would not only be un-cryptic enough to be acceptable, but also be a specific improvement.

Blakey as coach

In today's Terry Gross interview with Terence Blanchard, he describes Blakey's nurturing of the careers of his players, e.g. by urging them to compose when they were anxious to play the jazz classics that brought them into jazz. Maybe i just missed that in my scan of the accompanying article, or maybe that's equally true of a dozen more of the great band leaders, but AFAIK it's an aspect of him that needs to be added.

Name

Does anyone here know if Blakey officially changed his name to the Islamic one, or can anyone find it out? It is a common practice amongst converts from Western countries. --leahtwosaints (talk) 21:01, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

New article for The Jazz Messengers

I'm considering starting the article, but I thought I should check here first to make sure there aren't any objections. There are currently articles for Count Basie and Count Basie Orchestra, as well as Miles Davis and Miles Davis Quintet. To be consistent, shouldn't there be an article for the Messengers as well? Blakey was extremely important as a drummer, with or without the Messengers, and the group is considered the most important hard-bop ensemble. The section "Jazz Messengers alumni" in particular would seem more at home in a dedicated article, less relevant to an article about Blakey the man. Surely this drummer and group are each individually notable enough to merit their own articles.BassHistory (talk) 13:05, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

I agree. Rothorpe (talk) 16:00, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply Rothorpe. I'd like to hear from others as well, I don't want to put any work into an article if people will argue for its deletion.BassHistory (talk) 02:32, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

These sources do not ever belong in External links. I have moved the link farm from there to this talk page where they do belong. Warning: I didn't check them over, so be careful in choosing any references here. Thank you! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Section added on early life...

...to serve as a starting point, based on a decent online reference (see text). This should be beefed up to include substantial non-internet sources of the same material, so this section's sourcing does not succumb to link rot. As well, tags were added inline to that and the next section to prompt other editors to cease adding material without adequate citation. "If you cannot provide a citation for it, for a biography, it did not happen." A lede tag will be added as well, later. Le Prof 50.179.245.225 (talk) 19:51, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

I try not to tag articles unless it's absolutely necessary. This article is in need of some work, though. This article boasts highly of Blakey. Now all of the boasting is backed up with cites; however, it's still unencyclopedic. This is where WP:RSOPINION comes into play. If a reliable source discusses Blakey's greatness, it's not for us to state said greatness as fact-sourced or not. Instead, we should quote what has been said about him. (i.e. "Jazz critic John Doe writes in 'X' that Blakey...") I think it would also help to clarify exactly when Blakey changed his name, and whether or not he recorded or performed under this new name. Agree entirely: if not sourced, positive accolades are not POV neutral, but if adequately sourced you are reporting the published views of others. Great comment, and I hope others will begin to more closely follow this—not really advice, rather—explanation of Wikipedia policy and expectations.
