[edit]See [[1]]. Several trophy games are older. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.100.200.63 (talk) 03:11, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
How can anybody argue that it's the most heated rivalry in collegiate football? The games are played in 100 degree heat in the middle of a desert... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.181.100.136 (talk) 20:03, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- I know this is old (2010 & 2007), but it should have an explanation. It may "arguably" be the most heated, but that is subjected. However, the trophy is certified by the NCAA as being the oldest rivalry trophy in collegiate football. Furthermore, the game is typically played the Friday after Thanksgiving; therefore, it is not played in 100° heat, but likely in 60° or 50° (if not colder) temperatures...especially considering the Territorial Cup's history of being a night game. Technically, the games are played in a desert, but more accurately, the games are played in urban areas located in the Sonoran Desert. One urban area (Tucson) with over 1 million inhabitants, and the other (Phoenix-Tempe) with over 4 million inhabitants are hardly "in the middle of the desert" or in other words, not in a desolate location.--68.98.115.70 (talk) 05:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
Recommend to lose the entire Painting section as it has nothing to do with the Territorial Cup nor the game. Basically, its fluff and isn't really accurate anyway. --68.99.244.239 (talk) 06:02, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

The result of the proposal was no consensus. --BDD (talk) 16:46, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
Arizona–Arizona State football rivalry → Territorial Cup – This article was moved to Arizona–Arizona State football rivalry without discussion. This article previously concerned one of the oldest trophies (if not the oldest) and the move seemed inappropriate given there is no shortage of reliable sources for the trophy being the common name[2] and thus a descriptive title seems out of place. Relisted. BDD (talk) 20:05, 7 August 2013 (UTC) Labattblueboy (talk) 20:17, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- You've also requested moving Minnesota–Penn State football rivalry to this title. It can't be both. --BDD (talk) 21:29, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- The error has been corrected. This target is correct.--Labattblueboy (talk) 02:08, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose. While the trophy is well known, many or most sources for the rivalry only discuss it in passing, if at all, using a descriptive name instead, for instance: [3][4][5] and [6]. The current title is more in line with how the sources discuss the subject and is more natural and recognizable to readers. It has been the trend in articles in Category:College football rivalries in the United States to eschew the often obscure trophy names and fan nick names in favor of more recognizable descriptive titles.--Cúchullain t/c 16:10, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- No doubt that the rivalry is notable and potentially worthy of it's own article. However, the trophy is onto itself a notable object and subject and it should not have been moved to fill a gap in rivalry content. Duality for competitions and their associated trophies is not all all uncommon (a la Stanley Cup and Stanley Cup finals).--Labattblueboy (talk) 04:50, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- I've yet to see one of these college sports rivalry articles where material on the rivalry and its trophy weren't better dealt with in one place. This isn't any different considering the trophy material is poorly cited. The solution here is cleanup under the current name - with reliable sources this time - not writing separate articles.Cúchullain t/c 22:29, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

- Comment - what about the recent Kansas–Kansas State football rivalry move? This article would feature the cup title but the Kansas article will be referred to as a rivalry. It will be inconsistent. --MicroX (talk) 00:01, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Name
[edit]According to this, ASU's name was "Arizona Territorial Normal School" in 1889. It had previously been known as "Territorial Normal School at Tempe". Additionally, the link is superior as it points to History of Arizona State University, where more historical information can be found than at the main page. I'll be reverting the change and adding this source.--Cúchullain t/c 13:12, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry, got the dates wrong - it was Normal School of Arizona according to the link. It may be worth just saying it once and then going with "Tempe Normal School", since that was not only the school's official name from 1901-1925, it also seems to be used as a generic conventional name for the school's early history before it became the State Teachers' College.--Cúchullain t/c 13:39, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Assessment comment
[edit]The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Arizona–Arizona State football rivalry/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.
The opening paragraph is primarily concerned with the claim that the Little Brown Jug is the oldest rivalry trophy in collegiate football. It is both poorly written and off topic. The citation is a dead link, if such a page ever existed.
The section titled "Arizon-Arizona State rivalry" reviews each schools athletic programs, but offers very little information about the rivalry. CarneSeca (talk) 12:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC) |
