Place of birth
[edit]There is some disagreement over his place of birth - Graham Betts in "England - Player by Player" gives his place of birth as "Farnborough" as does "The Alphabet of the Saints" and www.englandfc.com.
www.englandstats.co. gives the place of birth as "Hartley Wintney" as does Michael Joyce on www.allfootballers.com.
Doug Lamming, in "An English Internationalists' Who's Who" says he was born in Farnborough and later "returned to his native Farnborough".
Both places are in Hampshire, approximately 10 miles apart and may well have been in the same registration area, with Farnborough being considerably larger. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 05:33, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Middle name
[edit]Sources also differ regarding his middle name.
Betts in "England - Player by Player" gives no middle name or initial.
"The Alphabet of the Saints" merely gives the middle initial as "D".
www.englandstats.co. gives his middle name as "Docwra" as does Michael Joyce on www.allfootballers.com.
The Football Who's Who 1903-04 refers to A. Turner capped 1900 & 1901 v Ireland; above his entry, Alfred Docwra Turner of Nottm Forest. (www.allfootballers.com lists an Alfred D. Turner, born 25/06/1879, who played for Nottingham Forest in 1902 & 1903). Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 05:48, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
If you believe englandstats and the Michael Joyce book, good luck. They've never done any original research, by which I mean into old yearbooks and newspaper reports. I know because I've been in contact with them! I suspect you haven't done this kind of research either, since you almost always quote other websites and modern books. I've been researching the England team for 30 years, reading literally thousands of contemporary match reports, old club handbooks, birth certificates, etc. Trust me sometimes!
