split

split from Indian astronomy so that in depth discussion of fringe claims can be held on-topic per WP:FRINGE, and to justify categorization in Category:Archaeoastronomy. --dab (𒁳) 09:13, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is easy to say they are dismissed in Mainstream Indology. But then one has to discuss why they are dismissed. If no reasons are given for such dismissal, it amounts to a hill of beans

This is clearly a misleading statement. It is usually very unambiguuous from the context, whether the author of the particular astronomical text is talking about astronomy , where he is mostly concerned about the position of the planet in the solar system or whether he is talking about astrology where he is primarily interested in predicting whether the consequences of the planetary positions are good or bad for the individual in question. While it is true that the word Jyotisa is used for both, it is impossible to mistake one(astronomy) from the other (astrology). For example in Ayabhata's work the Aryabhatiyum there is very little about astrology. Almost the entire book is about astronomical calculations. The precision of Arybhatas calculations are astonishing and it wasnt until the modern era that we have been able to match his precison.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Kaushal42 (talkcontribs)
