It's not a bad article, but essentially all the information in it is taken from the primary source, so we don't gain much by citing it. WolfmanSF (talk) 05:40, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Which species did we think it was before?

[edit]

I'm getting the impression the population hasn't been recently discovered, we've known about it for ages but only this year found out/declared that it is a new species. So which species did we think it belonged to before? Article says it's an inia, and it says it's most closely related to the Amazon river dolphin. Although it doesn't specifically state it one could presume it was previously thought of as belonging to Amazon river dolphin species, but it should state this if it is the case, so we don't have to guess or presume. Done. WolfmanSF (talk) 19:06, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also wondering who 'announced" this in 2014. Does the publication of an article make this "official"? Isn't there an international taxonomic society that determines these things? --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 09:56, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Generally speaking, the publication of a peer-reviewed article proposing taxonomic changes makes it official, since it will have been reviewed by top experts in the field. However, that does not guarantee that everyone will agree. WolfmanSF (talk) 16:52, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
