Arabs in South East Asia
[edit]Shouldn't there be an article on Arab Indonesians too, since there is a much more significant amount of them (like, 15 million?) and this article references them. 128.208.35.144 02:47, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Mokha
Yes. Also Arabs in Malaysia, Brunei and other regions of the Malay Archipelago.9abdulla 15:40, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
I think this article needs a lot more info. In my opinion, I feel that it is very one-sided. There's so much talk about the Al(families) and their contribution. How about the other families and their contributions.
Example of other families are: Baashin [bā ‘ashin] باعشن Badib [bā dhīb] باذيب Bafadhal [bā faḍl] بافضل Bafanah [bā fana‘] بافنع Bages [bā qais] باقيس Bagharib [bā gharīb] باغريب Bagushair (Baq'shir) [bā qushair] باقشير Bahajaj [bā ḥajjāj] باحجاج Baharon [bā hārūn] باهارون Bahashwan [bā ḥashwān]باحشوان Bajrai [bā jirai]/[bā jurai] باجري Bakhbireh [bā khubairah] باخبيرة Balidram [bil-ladram] بالدرم or بن لدرم [bin ladram] Bamadhaj [bā madḥaj] بامدحج Banafe' [bā nāfi‘] بانافع Bana'ma [bā nā‘imah] باناعمة Ba'Arfan[bā ‘arfān] با عرفان Bajammal [bā jammāl]با جمال Baobed [bā ‘ubaid] باعبيد Barabbah [bā rabbā‘] بارباع Barajak [bā rajā’] بارجاء Barosh ??? [bā ruwish] باروش Basalamah [bā salāmah] باسلامة Basharahil [bā sharāḥīl] باشراحيل Basrawi [baṣrāwī] بصراوي Baswedan [bā swaidān] باسويدان Bathef ???[ bā ṭahaf] باطهف Belwael [ba l-wa‘l] بالوعل / بلوعل (also known as Balweel or Balwael or Belweil [bil wi‘il]) (Classical Arabic أبا الوعل) Bin Abdat [bin ‘abdāt] (also [bin ‘ibdāt]) بن عبدات Bin Diab [bin dhiyāb]بن ذياب Bin Hamid [bin ḥāmid] بن حامد Bin Hassan [bin ḥasan] بن حسن Bin Rabak [bin raba‘] بن ربع (possibly [bin rabbā‘] بن ربّاع ) Bin Shahab [bin shihāb] بن شهاب Bin Shaykh Abu Bakar [bin al-shaikh abu-bakr] بن الشيخ ابوبكر Bin Shelham ???[bin shalham] بن شلهم Bin Tahir [bin ṭāhir] بن طاهر Bin Talib [bin ṭālib] بن طالب Binsmit [bin ṣumaiṭ] بن سميط Harharah [(bin) harharah] بن هرهرة Jawas [jawwās] جواس Lahdji [al laḥjī] اللحجي Lajam [la‘jam] لعجم (Classical Arabic الاعجم) Magad ???المقد Mattar [al-maṭar] المطر San'ani [al-ṣan‘ānī]الصنعاني (previously Al-Jaisi - the name change occurred after they moved to San'aa). and a lot more
By the way, why talk about the mixed marriages with the Malays community and why the comparison wih the Malays? Why not have a huge content about the mixed marriages within the Arab community. For example the Al-Khatib's and the Bin Abdat's, the Bin Abdat's and the Al-Junied's, the Al-Junied's and the Al-sagoff's, the Al-sagoff's and the Al-Haddad's and etc. This is after all about Arab Singaporean stated by the title. There are plenty of Pakistani Singaporean marrying into the Malay community but you will not see any part of it in their content because that's not what it is called by Pakistani Singaporean. Arab Singaporean do not only marry into Malay community, they do marry into the Chinese community, Eurasian community, Indian community(inclusive of Bengalis, Malayalees, Pakistani, Punjabis, Telugus, Tamils, Sindis and etc.) Do gather more information so as our future generations will be educated with their history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yemeni princesa (talk • contribs) 07:51, 6 December 2008 (UTC)
I agree that there are most probably Arab contributions other than the ones listed in the article. It is a valid point that you make. However, the records and literature on this are limited. As such, I hope that other readers could share their knowledge and contribute to the article.
With regard to the comparison with Malays, I believe this is an important aspect of the history of the Arabs in Singapore. This aspect touches on the Muslim, Arab and Malay communities. Unlike other unions, the intermarriages with the Malays have also contributed to the deep and lasting effect of the "Malayanisation" of the Arab community here. The Arabs in Singapore have by and large adopted the culture and values of the Malays. They speak, dress and act Malay and even eat Malay food. In fact, I daresay that they have more in common with the Malays in Malaysia and Indonesia than with the Middle Eastern Arabs. In fact, most of them are mistaken for Malays by the non-Arabs in Singapore. They have played an important role in being leaders of the Malay community in religion, business and politics. In fact, the first Malay Minister, Dr Ahmad Mattar, is actually of Arab descent. In short, the point is, they are an important and inseparable part of the Malay community. That is why I felt the identification and comparison with the Malays here was an important matter to highlight. Also, I am of Malay-Arab parentage myself. --Crying man (talk) 09:35, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
