[edit]Basic information to add to this article: the etymology of the word "aquifoliales." 173.88.246.138 (talk) 11:01, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
- I can explain it here, but it will need a bit more research to reference properly to put in the article. The family name Aquifoliaceae and the order name Aquifoliales have the same origin. The family name was first published by Friedrich von Berchtold and Jan Svatopluk Presl in 1825. It is based on the genus name Aquifolium Mill. However, Aquifolium is an illegitimate name for Ilex L., so the family should really have been "Ilicaceae" (the genitive of the Latin ilex is ilicis), not to be confused with Illiciaceae. The family name "Aquifoliaceae" is a conserved name in Appendix IIB of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, and "Ilicaceae" is a synonym.
