Translating "Annie Brocoli dans les fonds marins"
[edit]I'm a very cautious translator (and a Wiki-newbie) so I'm a little uncertain about the handling of "... dans
In case somebody has concerns / better ideas, I thought I'd post what I found out:
1. My first assumption is that "dans les fonds marins" is just a natural way of saying "at the bottom of the sea" - so it should be matched with a natural English expression.
2. With the help of wordreference.com, I noticed that "fonds" can also double as "getting to the bottom of an idea, problem, etc." (same as in English), so using the English word "bottom" would be good. This also fits a possible double-entendre with the movie theme of getting "to the bottom of" environmental issues.
3. French "marins" could better be "marine" in English, but the expression then becomes very unnatural. Same if you try to compact French "fonds marins" into Seabed, Ocean Bottom, etc.
4. I'm pretty sure it's just idiomatic that sea-bottom is plural in French and singular in English.
5. Not sure why "dans" vs. "au" ?! I just went with the "at" because it feels most natural in English.
I realize I'm being a little overly-analytical about this ... consider this posting to be just for the other over-analyticals out there!! Thanks!
[Then for another day ... article sounds a bit self-promoting, doesn't cite sources for information about inspiration, movie-making info.]
