On the historicity of "Norman" terminology

There seems to be wide agreement that the practice of describing the 12th Century English invaders of Ireland as "Norman" or "Anglo-Norman" is an invention of the late 19th Century and isn't historical.[1] I think at least a section is due addressing this dispute over nomenclature, if not a change in title.
