Videos
[edit]Uploaded a few videos of a woodcock I saw in the park some weeks ago. Very far from professional quality, and filled with the sound of New York, but I figured I'd drop them here in case editors found them useful to illustrate an aspect of the subject. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 04:21, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- Update: uploaded a couple new woodcock videos (unrelated to the ones above) which I think are more illustrative of particular behaviors. I've gone ahead and added them. One shows catching a worm, and the other the rocking/bobbing/dancing walk. Wasn't sure about adding the latter, since it's not well covered in the article yet (but there's no shortage of sources on it). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 20:45, 10 December 2019 (UTC)
Rocking behaviour
[edit]The article barely mentions the unusual rocking walk, and appears to suggest that this is part of a male courtship display. However, this website article by Jerry Coyne highlights alternative suggestions based on research by Bernd Heinrich. JezGrove (talk) 16:58, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
- I've added some information on Heinrich's theory. It's supported by John Alcock as a form of aposematism, so I've added that in too. grungaloo (talk) 00:28, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
