Current Deletions

[edit]

I have noticed that there are two teams up for AfD currently. These teams are straight-out recreational football.

I strongly suggest that THIS ARTICLE needs improving to a point where the notability of American football in Australia is demonstrated. Naming the article something different to the established name of the sport might not be the best beginning.

I will go through a process to merge.... team articles to their league league articles to their state state articles to this one

unless individual notability can be demonstrated. Garrie 02:34, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

“Gridiron” ain’t the established name of the sport in Austral English? —Wiki Wikardo 00:08, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I threw up a copyvio notice, as the bulk of this article seems to be copied from Gridiron Australia’s site . . . which, as far as I can see, makes this article pretty much useless. —Wiki Wikardo 00:08, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

Curious that in the months since the notability of Gridiron in Australia was challenged, above, there has been little reaction. I submit that this is not because the subject is not notable, but because the number of people with knowledge of the sport in Australia is too few to contain a quorum of Wikipedia editors. Thus illustrating again a problem with Wikipedia - "notability" is judged by mid-western Americans through their own knowledge and experience, and the rest of the English-speaking world gets the short stick.

Look at WP:FIVE and assess this article accordingly. The subject matter is encyclopedic, and is not a vanity or soapbox article. The subject matter can be verified through non-related media sources (eg, match scores reported in newspapers). The subject matter has notability by weight of history - the existence of organised American Football matches in Australia goes back over 25 years and there are solid primary source records of this (eg, annual publications of Sydney University Sport). And finally, the use of the term "gridiron" as the name of the sport in Australia is verified by sources noted at Gridiron football.

Now, it is up to someone with the requisite knowledge of the subject (and of the right sources to cite) to work on the article. Let them do so in peace. Darcyj (talk) 01:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just seeking to draw a wider range of informed opinion at Talk:Football in Australia regarding that article's future (whether persisting with the attempt at a comprehensive and well-balanced broad-concept article and how best to achieve that, or returning it to a simple disambiguation page).
