Please note
[edit]Those persons who have added their own names (followed with a non-encyclopedic commentary) into our Wiki-page should be aware that this violates what we at Wikipedia are trying to create. Such behavior is immature and should be refrained. The content was deleted, and will continue to be in the future.
If however, a viable encyclopedia article on ABT's student company is desired, those persons are welcome to create it on their own. Thank you.66.108.191.231 16:09, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Theatre vs. Theater
[edit]We don't say anything about this, and neither does ABT's website, but it would normally be assumed an American organization would use the American spelling, Theater. Any idea why they chose the (what looks like) UK version Theatre? Unless they were perhaps modelling it after the French "Théâtre". -- JackofOz (talk) 21:29, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
- I have no idea why an American ballet company would use the non-American spelling (I had the same thought), though I agree that it's unusual and possibly noteworthy in the article.
- If you're curious why the New York Times spells it "American Ballet Theater," the answer is here:
Q. Why is it that, when referring to the American Ballet Theatre, The Times misspells the last name as "Theater?" I realize that the paper's style book calls for the word to be spelled with "er." But this is a proper name, not a matter of style. With that sort of reasoning, one might expect the paper to change "Chick-Fil-A" to "Chick Filet." And "Procter & Gamble" to "Procter and Gamble," since "&" is not something the paper's style book would permit, except as part of a proper name. Like the "re" in American Ballet Theatre. Shouldn't the spelling of a a corporation's name be the company's decision, not The Times's?
— David Lyman, Cincinnati
A. I asked Phil Corbett, the standards editor of The Times, to tackle this one:
In general, we do defer to individuals and companies in the rendering of names. We make some exceptions, though, mostly in the service of consistency. (For example, we get complaints from auto racing fans about our use of "Nascar" rather than "NASCAR" — but our rules call for acronyms longer than four letters to be rendered with just an initial capital, to avoid have long strings of capital letters blaring out of the article.)
For "theater," here's the relevant passage from The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage:
"For a consistent appearance in the news columns, where numerous theater names occur side by side daily, use the er spelling of theater uniformly."
- So... there you go. --MZMcBride (talk) 04:12, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
To update this question, The Grammarist explains that 'theatre' was in common usage in the United states and it wasn't until the late twentieth century that preference switched to 'theater'. ABT was formed in 1939 (early to mid twentieth century) so the question on why they didn't use the "American spelling" is based on modern assumptions and not ones from the time period. Content
[edit]This article is pretty much a boring compilation of lists. An actual history of the company would be most welcome. Markhh (talk) 18:32, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- I agree. It seems that user http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Robertgreer is NOTORIOUS for using Wikipedia as a source to keep lists of useless trivia about NYCB and ABT that are not notable. Unfortunately, he does more for http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Ballet_Portal than any other user and so no sanctions can be made against him without significantly damaging the viable information and work he contributes. 38.109.88.196 (talk) 01:20, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
