Surname
[edit]According to [1] her name is spelled Muttathupandathu. Can someone please correct and move the article? -- 194.8.198.62 09:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- That seems to be a spelling mistake. Her first name is spelled wrongly as well in the link above. --Jacob.jose (talk) 02:28, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- In the heading (title) of the article cited above, her first name is spelled ALFONSA but all other instances (in the body) of the document her name is spelled ALPHONSA. All other references cite her name as ALPHONSA. Her last name in the article cited above does spell it MUTTATHUPANDATHU but the few other references that do cite a last name spell it MUTTATHUPADATHU. I believe the first article lost some of its credibility when they misspelled her first name in the title. (Hey, I'm not the one to tell the Vatican they are wrong!) She is commonly known by her full name, Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 19:59, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- I am not sure where the surname "of the Immaculate Conception" comes from. It does not reflect the name congregation that she was a member of. She was a member of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (Poor Clares or Order of Poor Ladies). The surname "of the Immaculate Conception" appears to refer to the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. [2] Can someone research this? I have sent a message to the Bishop of the Dioces of her congregation in India requesting clarification. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 05:11, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- The phrase "of the Immaculate Conception" is not a surname. The concept in religious life used to be that you abandoned the use of a family name. In addition to the name given one at their admission by the institute, some religious mystery of particular meaning to the candidate would be added to their name. Examples are John of the Cross, Teresa of Jesus, etc.
- Additionally, she was NOT a Poor Clare. Despite their title, the Sisters of this institute are members of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis, not the Second Order, the Poor Ladies. Daniel the Monk (talk) 13:53, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Canonization
[edit]Has she been officially canonized yet? As far as I can read and find I see that the process is still going on and yet to be completed [3] [4] . Shouldn't the article still call her Blessed rather than Saint untill its made official? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 09:39, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- This has been resolved as her canonization is now official. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 20:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, that was a message from long time ago. Thanks anyways :D Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 22:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Criticism, anyone?
[edit]Not everyone in the world holds the same opinion about this lady and her becoming a saint. I could see one well written article of criticism here. Since this is an encyclopedia entry, I believe even these deserve a mention here. An encyclopedia should not project only one point of view. Note that wikipedia articles about Amritanandamayi and Sai Baba have sections named "criticism". I know I can add this to the article directly, but I have no time or interest for an edit war. I just want to know if there are people around here who feel the same as me. If there is enough support, I will add a criticism section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.214.187.19 (talk) 19:27, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Article name
[edit]Is it necessary to have Saint Alphonsa as the title of the article. Rather, it should be Alphonsa Muttathupadathu. I have seen many articles on saints like Gonsalo Garcia, Francis Xavier, and Aloysius Gonzaga. They all use the full names. Saint being a common word should be preferred only in case of disambiguation. Any comments? KensplanetTalkContributions 13:43, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support: Move to Alphonsa Muttathupadathu with Saint Alphonsa as a redirect. -- Tinu Cherian - 15:09, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose: Saint Alphonsa is popularly known as Alphonsamma and now Saint Alphonsamma. അല്ഫോന്സാമ്മ is the name given in ml.wiki as well. Alphonsa Muttathupadathu should be quite a strange name for most who have heard about her. I would prefer moving to Alphonsamma or Saint Alphonsamma, if the other title is not preferred. --Jacob.jose (talk) 05:35, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose: Since the article is about a Saint, it need to start with Saint. I suggest moving the article name to Saint Alphonsamma or keep it as Saint Alphonsa . She was known us Alphonsamma and now after the canonization as Saint Alphonsamma . There is no reason to change it to something else which is unfamiliar.Tarijanel (talk) 20:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose: I do not think nuns in her order retain their family name once they accept the veil. Besides, I doubt if anybody would identify "Muttathupadathu" with Saint Alphonsa. I am also against moving to "Alphonsamma", as that is only a more respectful form of her Christian name as used in Malayalam. It might be apt for the Malayalam wikipedia, but here it would stand out as odd, and against general convention.--thunderboltz(TALK) 20:38, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Support Should this issue come up again, I would support it as in keeping with the general practice in Wikipedia, as noted by the original editor. This is a general encyclopedia and not a religious document. Daniel the Monk (talk) 13:58, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Support The article name needs to be changed to Alphonsa Muttathupadathu. Avoid honorofic titles. Varkeymanavalan (talk) 05:17, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
- Support it should be Alphonsa Muttathupadathu. In wikipedia, saints names do not have the honorofic the names. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidjose365 (talk • contribs) 19:33, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
Excessive photos
[edit]The photo of her father is excessive. It does not add to the understanding of the article topic, and distorts the layout of the article. This photo should be removed to the Main Article of her father, if his notariety warrants it. Stephen Charles Thompson (talk) 05:58, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
In the second paragraph it is stated that Alphonsamma, as she was locally known, was born in Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palai. But Alphonsamma was born in the Syro Malabar Catholic Arch Diocese of Changanassery. Moreover She was born in Kudamaloor and Kudamaloor is very near to Kottayam and comes under Kottayam ,not Pala, and even Pala comes under Kottayam district.
