Genre

[edit]

To describe Alone Again (Naturally) as 'soft rock' seems daft, it had much more in common with the singer-songwriter vogue of that time. Despite not describing the sound that term fits better as the song's genre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.180.95.253 (talk) 16:49, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The song, "Alone Again (Naturally)" is attributed to Gilbert O'Sullivan, and was released in 1972. What is interesting is that in 1980, my grandmother played an old 78 recording of this song for me. I'm not sure how far back this recording dated, but it had to be the 1930's or 1940's. I don't know if anyone in my family saved my grandmother's 78 records, but I will check. Does anyone know any more about this song? Fifipart1 03:30, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My father, who died in 1999, told me this song was popular in the 1930s. I have a distinct memory of hearing Gilbert O'Sullivan's version playing on the radio and my father singing along. So the information in this article apparently isn't very accurate. It originated long before 1972.Malkee (talk) 05:01, 18 March 2015 (UTC)malkee[reply]

Esther Phillips?

[edit]

Even though the link on her wikipedia page to the album points here, it is not even mentioned on this page that Esther Phillips has an album (and song) with the same exact title, from the same year. Zapwai (talk) 20:38, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Zapwai[reply]

[edit]

I think it's an interesting topic: What were the most popular songs of the 1970s? And I can see how "You Light Up My Life" might be 1st and "Alone Again (Naturally)" might be 5th. I'm just not finding the reference. (This is a claim we make in our lead.)

Here's a radio station that lists their top 100 for the 1970s. http://www.mbgtop40.com/top100s/1970s/chart.html But not sure how much weight to put on this. FriendlyRiverOtter (talk) 17:52, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

HIMSELF?

[edit]

I don't find this song on the album "Himself", which was released in August 1971 (Alone Again was released as a single in Feb 1972). Instead, I show it on the EP titled "Alone Again (Naturally)" released in October of 1972. Both the EP and the Album contain simular cover art, however.Atocha (talk) 23:08, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Relevence

[edit]

is this ("The anime was based upon the popular manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi.") relevent to anything? Doesn't seem so. I'm removing it for now, you people can put it back up if you think it's important (if you want to put it back just copy this):(The anime was based upon the popular manga of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi.)

Fly

[edit]

Should it be mentioned in the article that the song "Fly" by Sugar Ray used the Alone Again's line "twenty-five years old, my mother God rest her soul"? 2001:5B0:2445:2FB8:FDF9:F06D:1E:B044 (talk) 03:25, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cover in the Netherlands

[edit]

As you can read here (in Dutch), this song was covered (with completely different lyrics, mind you), this Dutch song is very well known in the Netherlands! https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_(Toen_was_geluk_heel_gewoon) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.82.248.133 (talk) 12:24, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Gay?

[edit]

The lyrics say he was gay. Is that why he was stood up at the altar? 77.98.196.38 (talk) 18:05, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The lyrics say "To think that only yesterday. I was cheerful, bright and gay." So we can probably assume this means "jolly" not "homosexual". And it was yesterday. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:18, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
