Likely a bad translation. Russian Navy routinely puts ships in "reserve" which means they have a skeleton crew assigned to maintain as much as possible but are not otherwise operational. Such a ship is still "commissioned" in the register but by western standard would be considered "retired" for all practical purposes. Should the need arise, more funding becomes available etc. the ship can be manned with a minimum of fuss. In the Russian parlance a ship is trully "retired" when it is struck from the reserve which can easily be a decade or more after it was put there. The active ships were likely re-manned as the need arose for them. Since puling a ship from the reserve does not necessarily presume any type of an upgrade like a re-activation does in the West, these were likely just cleaned-up, oiled-up, fueled-up and off they went.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.240.61.60 (talk) 17:09, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

The other vessels are Ropucha-class landing ship. What is still not clear afaik is whether the destroyed ship was the Orsk or the Saratov. SEM (talk) 17:35, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

For what it's worth, the Ukrainian MOD released a statement on their facebook page clarifying that it was the Saratov sunk with quote "20 tanks, 45 armored personnel carriers and 400 personnel" on board. The update also claimed that the landing ships Caesar Kunikov and Novocherkassk were also damaged in the explosion. Not sure if it's fully credible, but some media outlets like The Guardian have picked up on it. Mislabeled article

Since the text clearly states the ship is Tapir-class, and "Alligator" is merely the NATO reporting name for it, shouldn't the article be about Tapir-class ships, not Alligator-class ships? Alligator is not the class of this ship. Alligator is merely the NATO reporting name for ships of the Tapir class. GNillePuh (talk) 09:24, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

In a few cases, the Soviets were sometimes known to use some of the Nato reporting names. However, I agree that it's a little confusing, and probably could be explained better on the article. AnonMoos (talk) 15:57, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

Saratov and Orsk

I noticed that Russian landing ship Nikolay Filchenkov and Russian landing ship Nikolay Vilkov have articles. Perhaps it is time to convert Russian landing ship Orsk and Russian landing ship Saratov from redirects into articles? -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 03:46, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
