Abbreviation
[edit]AES seems to be more popular even in English but there is at least one source that uses ASS https://www.economist.com/the-world-this-week/2023/09/21/politics Inteloff (talk) 14:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
ASS
[edit]@Bkonrad The abbrevation used in the media is ASS [1] [2] [3], not AoSS. Scu ba (talk) 19:02, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for providing sources. I had noticed that the second source referenced in the article used AoSS and at the time, I did not see any other of the current references use ASS. older ≠ wiser 20:21, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- Guys,
- Regardless of what the media might use, let's define our own name and make it known to everyone. For any English-speaking person, "ASS" means the buttocks, the anus, and so on. Simply put, it is inappropriate and leaves a lot of room for mockery.
- Although the countries in this confederation have dropped French as an official language, none of them are officially English-speaking countries. For that reason, someone needs to make the move to set an appropriate English translation in stone before it becomes a mockery.
- This is similar to Turkey deciding to move from the animal's name to Türkiye, which inspires much more respect for the country.
- I have decided to contact the authorities and propose the name SSA, which stands for the Sahel States' Alliance.
- As soon as I have an answer, I will report back here and make the necessary edits.
- Thank you for your interest in this page. Asiby (talk) 15:39, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Alliance vs Confederation
[edit]Some other language versions of Wikipedia has separate articles for each. Kaihsu (talk) 11:27, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- I haven't seen a source that has the parties to the Alliance of Sahel States call themselves the Confederation of Sahel States. For all we know they could be the Alliance of Sahel States Confederation or some other naming convention. Doyna Yar (talk) 12:52, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Doyna Yar: No reason to split. See here: "Indeed, they adopted the treaty establishing a Confederation between Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger called the “Alliance of Sahel States” Confederation, abbreviated AES Confederation." Panam2014 (talk) 20:40, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- I would support the article to change its name to "Confederation of Sahel States". Is the name "Alliance of Sahel States" the official name of the state? Zyxrq (talk) 18:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- We could also change the Wikipedia articles name to "Sahel States" and leave the official name of the confederation in the article itself. Zyxrq (talk) 18:39, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- It is not the official name. Panam2014 (talk) 21:06, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
