Year of birth

[edit]

If Jewish Records Indexing – Poland is to be believed, Allan Gray was born in 1902, not 1904 as stated in the article. At any rate, the online genealogical database records the birth of one Józef Żmigrod (or possibly Żmigród) in Tarnów (the composer's birthplace) in that year and has no record of anybody else by that name or any variant of it being born in what is now Poland during the decade in question. Furthermore, Gray's entry in the death indexes for England and Wales gives his date of birth as 23 February 1902. How is it, then, that the researcher referred to in the footnote can claim that a search conducted in the archives of Tarnów has confirmed the correct year to be 1904?

I was also born and raised in Tarnow. Next time I'm in Tarnow I'll look in the registry office archives. At that time Tarnow belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and all official files were very well kept. I have now obtained the birth certificate of the person mentioned in my earlier posting. It gives his name as Józef Żmigrod and date of birth as 23 February 1902. Clearly, it is the composer’s birth certificate. I have amended the article accordingly.
