The {bias} tag
[edit]BonsaiViking put a {bias} tag on this article. I've encouraged them to be specific about what they thought was biased.
In my opinion making the wikipedia have a NPOV does not mean that it should shrink away from topics that might embarrass some readers. Some readers may think this article is biased because they feel it puts the Bush administration in an unflattering light, and this means it is biased. I disagree. I did my best to have my contribution to the article be just a simple stating of the facts in al-Marri's case. \
Slavery was once widespread in certain parts of the world. If slavery was still being practiced today, and there was a slave revolt, like that described in the movie Spartacus, would we allow apologists for the slavery industry to mark uses of the term slave revolt as biased? Would we let them use NPOV/POV discussions to make the rest of us drop mention of the revolt, or use euphemisms, like calling it a "labor dispute"?
I think it is the same here. Al-Marri's imprisonment, without charge, is significant. The conditions of his imprisonment is significant. I tried my best to have my contribution let the facts speak for themselves. I welcome a serious discussion of what this article should contain. -- Geo Swan 17:04, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't start the discussion page, I'm kinda new here. The reason for the {bias} tag was while the article properly used "report" or "reportedly" to describe his conditions, it only reflects one point of view, namely that of al-Marri and his lawyers. I realize the difficulty of obtaining clear facts in a case like this, which is why I believe it would not have been an appropriate inclusion in a traditional encyclopedia (which Wikipedia is not). Your updates to the External Links section since the tag was placed go a long way toward neutrality in this article, but as you noted in your edit summary on the CBS link, some of that information should be included in the article. -- BonsaiViking 16:22, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
The {crime-stub} categorization?
[edit]Is Ali Saleh Kahlah al-Marri a criminal? Someone categorized his article with a {crime-stub}. May I suggest this is inappropriate, until he has been convicted of a crime. He was charged with some banking crimes. But the charges were dropped. He has not been convicted of any crimes. Since, under the US justice system, someone is innocent until proven guilty, al-Marri is still an innocent man.
So I am changing it to a {law-stub}. -- Geo Swan 08:15, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
He is not a criminal but an alleged criminal, so he does belong in the {{crime-bio-stub}} category.--Carabinieri 08:23, 21 September 2005 (UTC)
I would concur with Carabinieri, but because the tag states "This crime-related biographical article", not "This criminal-related biographical article". -- BonsaiViking 16:22, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Define brig
[edit]Would be useful to define brig: from the article I'm not sure if he's on a two-masted sailing ship or a naval prison in South Carolina. 203.109.163.218 12:15, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Image
[edit]There are a couple of images of this guy floating around on the web. One of them has got to be public domain. I looked, but could not find. I'm tempted to claim fair use, but would rather get a free shot. Any thoughts? —Gaff ταλκ 18:48, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Out of date?
[edit]If Qatari diplomat Mohammed Al-Madadi was on his way to Denver to meet Ali Al-Marri in prison, I don't think Al-Marri is being held in Illinois any more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobjuch (talk • contribs) 21:05, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
responsible use of tags
[edit]Another contributor placed an {{undue}} tag on this article in June 2012. That same contributor placed a {{Coi}} tag on it a minute later.
I am concerned whether these were responsible use of tags. When instantiated the {{undue}} tag tells readers:
An editor has expressed a concern that this article lends undue weight to certain ideas, incidents, controversies or matters relative to the article subject as a whole. Please help to create a more balanced presentation. Discuss and resolve this issue before removing this message.
The {{coi}} tag tells readers:
A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies, particularly neutral point of view. Please discuss further on the talk page.
It seems to me that the tag requires the tag placer voicing the COI concern to explicitly explain on the talk page why they placed the tag -- something the tag placer has not yet done.
Similarly, although the tag doesn't explicitly say so, it seems to me that it implies the tag placer should explicitly explain which ideas, incidents, etc., they think were receiving undue weight. Geo Swan (talk) 16:45, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- Agree - since nothing has been added on the "Undue" since June 2012, I'm taking it off. The article cites numerous sources.Parkwells (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
