Extinct or recovering - which is it?

[edit]

In one place it says they went extinct in 1920, in another place it says conservation efforts have restored them. Which is it? They can’t both be true. 2600:1700:8720:5000:C08E:FCE7:738:B5C (talk) 16:38, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the passage was slightly unclear: one population, doubtfully a subspecies, seems to have become extinct, while the rest of the species has recovered, and the use of pronouns didn't make it clear that the referent was only that particular population.
I hope I've improved the basic clarity but the whole of that passage needs references and could do with more detail (why have they been reclassified, for instance).
I'd also appreciate, if anyone has a moment, the addition of the more worldwide IUCN status in the infobox, as well as the almost specifically American natureserve one (if I understand rightly, it is designed to be capable of use on anything, but in practice isn't used outside the USA and a few other American countries).
