Name

[edit]

I've recently noted that his original name was removed from the article on the grounds that it's "unethical and inconsiderate" to publish a trans person's birth name without their consent. However, the situation in this particular case, as with Chaz (Chastity) Bono or Barbra (Bill) Amesbury, is that Butler was already a prominent and notable writer under his former name before pursuing gender reassignment, and several of the works listed in this article were published under that name rather than as Alec.

I do agree that in a circumstance where a transman becomes notable only under his male name, then we shouldn't include the birth name in our article in most cases, as it's private information if the person hasn't chosen to publicly reveal it. However, in Butler's case he has been publicly known by both names at different times in his career, meaning that:

  1. the information is already out there on the public record,
  2. it would cause undue confusion to a reader who wants to seek out a copy of Radical Perversions: 2 Dyke Plays or Black Friday? and can't find them because they don't know the name those works were published under,
  3. the eminently notable film about his gender transition was called Audrey's Beard, meaning that the information would still be present in this article whether we acknowledged it in the lead or not.

Those are the reasons why the name is present in this article. Bearcat (talk) 16:55, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Bearcat: Does this article still need indefinite semi? You applied it in 2016. I'm aware of the DS, but it doesn't prevent unregistered editors from editing, from what I can see. The recent edits span years. Anarchyte (talk) 14:42, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
