Does anyone know the origin of the lake's name?Thriley (talk) 21:44, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:Thriley, according to Wikimapia, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Lake has its unusual name due to its location "next to the State Psychiatric Hospital." (I'm assuming there is an alcohol and drug abuse rehab facility near the lake.) The problem is, Wikimapia is not a reliable source per WP:CIRCULAR.– Gilliam (talk) 22:01, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Currently the article refers to Morris village. Prototype for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction (Q66847853) Arlo James Barnes 23:58, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I found a source that sources itself on the name as physical document of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

I am not english enough to incorporate it into text of article properly. Nicponim (talk) 07:24, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should this be added to place names considered unusual? --special:contribs/2607:ea00:200:500:6d53:51b6:d37a:dc16

Sure! I added it to the 'Unusually descriptive place names' section.Arlo James Barnes 23:58, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Article rename

[edit]

I propose to rename this article to 'Village Lake (South Carolina)' or similar, as that is the new official name adopted 9 June 2022. Additionally that is one of the names used by the owner, unlike the present name of this article. Any thoughts?

Hi Citruswinter, neither of the links you provided work for me... both display an error. Would you be able to fix/update them? Brycehughes (talk)
Oppose Links do not work, but I found no evidence of such a name change. Kstern (talk) 13:45, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the record of the rename per USGS. Brycehughes (talk) 13:52, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the name in the article. Whether or not the article should be moved would probably be worth a move request discussion. I'd probably weakly oppose it. Brycehughes (talk) 14:04, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've fixed the links in my above comment Citruswinter (talk) 19:16, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your great edits Brycehughes. I think this page is in good shape now regarding the lake's rename. As to whether the article should be moved, I don't know what the Wikipedia 'rules' or conventions are in this situation and I'm happy to defer to what I assume is your significant experience in these matters. Citruswinter (talk) 19:22, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Citruswinter, the relevant policy is WP:PLACE. In a nutshell, when a place's "widely accepted name" differs from its official name, then we should go with the widely accepted name. So the question would be whether "Village Lake" is the widely accepted name. I don't think it is... at least, not yet. Brycehughes (talk) 19:45, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation. I hereby rescind my suggestions to rename the article! Citruswinter (talk) 16:25, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
