Is Alanis Jewish?

There is no official information divulging that Alanis Morrissette is Jewish, but there are clues that she may be of Jewish descent. She got her surname from her father, a French Canadian, but her mother was a Hungarian immigrant to Canada named Georgia Mary Ann Feuerstein. That's a Jewish surname, and certainly not a Hungarian one. And if her mother's Jewish, she is as well. The only other possibility is that Alanis's mom is a Hungarian of German descent, but if that's the case, why don't any sources say so? My hunch, especially since everyone I've ever heard of with the name Feuerstein has been Jewish, is that Alanis's mom was a Jew whose family wanted to keep a low profile due to anti-Semitism. But this is only a theory that so far remains unverified in any official source. Can anyone confirm this? Maybe, you, Alanis??Barmispain (talk) 10:49, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

- Original research. We'll leave her as simply Hungarian. Her German (NOT necessarily Jewish) name could be due to the fact that she is very distantly German on one line of her family. It could also be due to her Hungarian ancestors adopting the name due to being part of the Austro-Hungarian empire - happened. Oddly enough most Jews from Hungary not only consider themselves of Hungarian descent (probably true as people like Peter Lorre look more Magyar than Middle-Eastern; but that is just an irrelevant opinion) but they also had Hungarian names until they were forced to adopt them by Austrian who saw all Jews as Deutsche. They were not the only group in Hungary to change to German names, as many other Magyars who didn't follow Judaism did for political and economic reasons.

Sources state she is Hungarian and she speaks (and considers herself Hungarian). With that, we must consider a Magyar as not only will she descend from Magyar families (her family has seemingly long been Catholic) but that is what she considers herself. She might have ancestors that practiced Judaism but she is not a Jew nor is there any substantial evidence that she is Jewish (other than a flimsy case based on a name). In anycase, adding that she is Jewish is original research. - The Mummy — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.115.200 (talk) 11:00, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Best Selling Debut Album

It says in the intro that jagged little pill is the best-selling debut album of all time. Please explain why - appetite for destruction has sold 38 million where jagged has sold 33 (wiki article claims). and appetite is an actual debut album, whereas jagged is alanis third album!? so the statement makes no bloody sense at all, does it? ;)130.225.244.179 (talk) 11:56, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I understood it to be the best-selling debut album by a female performer. For a while it was the best selling album (full stop) of all time by a female artist. That title was then later claimed by Britney Spears. Also the reason it is considered a debut is because her career moved to an international level and she began using her full name, as opposed to simply "Alanis".Jadieb (talk) 11:27, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Part of the confusion I think comes from her earlier albums not being released internationally. You're right that it wasn't a debut album, I'll fix up the article. Mdwh (talk) 13:19, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

(Yes, one could call it an "international debut", but it doesn't really make sense to compare an artist's first album, to a non-first album that just happened to be the released in a new country, and the whole thing would get rather complicated. And if we really use such a sloppy definition, can we really be sure that this is still the best-selling? Maybe there's another group with a non-first album that "debuted" in a particular area. It's simpler to stick with best selling first albums.) Mdwh (talk) 13:22, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Billboard is the most reliable source when it comes to sales/charts. It considers JLP her debut album and dozens of articles do as well. "We're including Morissette's "Jagged," as it was her U.S. major label debut".--Cannot (talk) 15:27, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
I think it would be righteous to write that it's the best-selling debut album in the US.--Cannot (talk) 15:42, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Reference for Dogma blurb

I don't know how to format it, someone else can, but the part about the only part being left for her after she returned from India is from the liner notes, written by Smith, of the 2-disc DVD of Dogma.Droidguy1119 (talk) 09:22, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

You Can't Do That On Television

Shouldn't there be some sort of reference to Alanis' involvement with this TV show? Whether it was a spring board into her initial kiddie-pop success in Canada or not, she was on the show. 209.254.200.110 (talk) 16:16, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

NPOV?

This page's current content is extremely inappropriately written, and filled with non-NPOV content. Lyric snippet's don't belong on a page about Morissette, they belong on individual album pages. Additionally, the writer pre-supposes to know which lyrics correspond with which part of Morissette's life, something which would really need to be backed up with references to Morissette sayingso herself. In all it's just extremely not-encyclopedic. That being said, I'm on my way out the door, so if it hasn't been fixed by the time I get back, I'll do it myself. 66.157.29.22 05:43, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

FWIW, I agree with your remark on the non-NPOV content 213.51.209.230 17:58, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

agreed - it makes no sense whatever, everything is out of order, it's like an angelfire fanpage.Mrs smartygirl (talk) 17:58, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Alanis album was Top 10 in Canada or US?

Credited simply as Alanis, Morissette's first album, "Alanis", was issued in 1991, and her first single, "Too Hot", reached the Top 10.

Where? Canada, or the US? --Robert Merkel

I think in Canada, but I don't want to change the entry without being sure.  :-) -- Zoe

I'm sure it was in Canada, for the album wasn't released anywhere else. --MTS

I'm also certain it's Canada --Zippanova 18:56, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm dead sure it's Canada, it wasn't released anyplace else. --koll2786

Image layout

For someone who knows about these things, the image Alanis4.jpg overlaps and obscures some text when viewed with Mozilla 1.5 Thanks! 207.189.98.44 19:56, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)

And Alanis2.jpg also. The stated width of the floats (in the style= markup) didn't match the actual width of the images. I've fixed this, and cropped Alanis2.jpg so it doesn't take up so much space. Zack 20:17, 30 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Addendum: I also switched both images -2 and -4 to float:right. It isn't quite as artistic this way, but the section headings "Jagged Little Pill" and "So-Called Chaos" no longer look like image captions, which I think is more important. Zack

Buying So-Called Chaos?

Chocolateboy, I notice you've been making a lot of changes to this page too. Glad I'm not the only one! Planning to buy her new album, So-Called Chaos? Stoic Squirmer

Hi, Stoic Squirmer. Nice contributions you've made to that page! I may buy the new album. Haven't heard anything from it yet. chocolateboy 10:43, 18 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Madonna

3rd Aug 2004

I love Alanis and loathe Madonna, and yet I think this article understates Madonna's influence on the success of Alanis through her company, not influence musically, but in terms of giving her a chance to be a success. Without Madonna I doubt we would have even heard of Alanis. I have made additions to this article that have intimated the significance of Madonna but over time they seem to have been removed or diluted.

I think that Madonna herself had very little to do with it. The signing was with Glen Ballard (who was the producer of the first two albums as well). Although Maverick Records is Madonna's company, she wasn't really involved in the process of making the album. The influence and success should be attributed the Ballard himself then. Madonna, has been quoted as saying that Alanis "reminds her of herself when she was just starting out". She also had a joke (People Magazine Interview - I think) saying that Alanis uses a lot of "50cent" words in her lyrics. Besides those statements and Alanis saying she really looks up to Madonna (especially in her earlier career in Canada - not the similarities in their styles then), I don't believe she was really involved. Dave Coulier?

What is the source for the Dave Coulier claim? In these parts it's not Dave Coulier but former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Felix Potvin. This is more believable for a few reasons -- Potvin had a reputation for being a jackass, and he's closer to home (and I've heard more sources say it was Potvin). Anyway -- I can't provide a source for it for now so I say -- unless the Coulier connection can be independently confirmed, it should be struck. Rhombus 21:58 24 November 2024

I'm striking it. Most places I've looked say it's unknown who the guy was. If it was known, why would it be such a big deal? Source, please, one who adds such info. --AmyBeth 07:56, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

No, don't strike it -- Alanis admitted it was about Coulier in her interview with Howard Stern. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.57.122.221 (talkcontribs) .

The only sources I can find regarding it are accounts from people who supposedly listened to that edition of the show. --Jtalledo (talk)
Perhaps it should be changed to "Allegedly" instead, until a transcript or recording of that interview can be found... Shuckiduck 07:52, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
So like: the "date" isn't really when Rhombus posted it in 2006; why shouldn't that be edited with some kind of a bot? 207.151.38.178 (talk) 02:32, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
It's not Dave; it wasn't anybody. So this GDFL thing says I "release" stuff; whatever, no-one believes me anyway. But to "improve" the article, one should say it's ... "a way to calm the angry voice." That's a good hint, if any. But it wasn't originally intended to be Dave; Wayne Gretsky is the more than likely "candidate" if'n I were to choose someone. Better not say more, lest Henry Bot zaps me again.207.151.38.178 (talk) 00:40, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Harmonica type

Does anyone know what type of harmonica Morissette uses in her songs? 14-hole diatonic, 12-hole chromatic, 16-hole chromatic, or something else like the tremolo? —Lowellian (talk) 05:15, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

Star Search question

The article says: "In New York City, Morissette landed a spot on Star Search, a popular televised American talent competition" Can this be updated to say how she did in the competition (good or bad). --rob 12:53, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Is thare a reference for this statement? I can't imagine that she would have gone onto a competition like that. At that point her career was doing pretty well. Also, I've looked through the article and can't find the mention of Star Search anywhere. Has it been taken out?Jadieb (talk) 11:49, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

I'm removing the image because it seems strange having two images from the same concert in the same position on the article. Extraordinary Machine 21:20, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Plus, it's a scary photo--makes me think of those Bad Celeb Photos that get brandished around to make fun of the individual and gloat over! I think we should remove it from this page, too. Efrafra 10:16, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Gay icon category 2

I reverted the addition to Category:Gay icons again. I'm opposed to having such a category for the same reason I'm opposed to having Category:Sex symbols - they're subjective categories that run contrary to NPOV. Changing the lyrics to "Ironic" doesn't make her a gay icon. It might make her a gay rights advocate and I wouldn't be opposed to that category being used if it exists. --Jtalledo (talk) 01:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

One thing that makes her a gay icon: She kissed another woman in an appearance on Sex and the City. Her character participated in a bisexual game of Spin the Bottle. 24.143.153.208 01:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

That has virtually nothing to do with the question of what makes a person a gay icon. And besides, this discussion is almost a year old; the category was deleted months ago. Bearcat 02:14, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Alanis Morissette in relationships

Hello,

[http:// Alanis Morissette in Relationships] is meant to give the visitor a wide angle view of how Alanis Morissette handles her relationships in essence and in practice. It also allows the visitors to examine the characteristics of their own relationships with Alanis Morissette.

Both content and test are based on sound astrological knowledge and research and they gained popularity among web surfers.

I believe that even though Astrology is not considered a mainstream science, these knowledge and compatibility tool should be made available to whoever wishes to study Alanis Morissette as broadly as possible.

I have no desire to be considered a spammer and I don't want to force my link on the authors of Alanis Morissette's article.

I ask you, authors of Alanis Morissette that if you have an objection to placing a link to Alanis Morissette in Relationships in the External Links section, please note it here. Else, I’ll place the link hoping that it would be a valid resource for Alanis Morissette's fans and researchers.

With appreciation, Midas touch 05:01, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Isn't linking us to the websites here still considered spam? I thought the hyperlinks above were valid wikis, but when I clicked on them, they led to the Top Synergy sites anyway...doesn't seem appropriate for this article, but I thought I'd ask others if there's a reason we've left the links here. Otherwise, I'd think they should be removed as they're a bit misleading and we really should not consider astrology websites are a "valid resource". Efrafra 10:13, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
yup. which is why i just took them off. (hopefully)

Alternative to what?

I'm not so sure she should be considered an alternative rock artist. She's really just a pop artist who jumped on the "everything pop is alternative now" bandwagon that made alternative look like a meaningless phrase. -- LGagnon 15:07, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Jumped? I'm not entirely certain she has claimed to be any kind of artist - genres were probably assigned by record labels and music journalists. --Jtalledo (talk) 21:15, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I dont know how you can say that Alanis Morissette is anything but Alternative Rock. She isn't 'pop' at all though. --LocalBandAid02 15:07, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

US Hot 100 data entirely wrong

According to my Billboard book of top 40 hits by Joel Whitburn, the chart data is entirely misquoted. I already deleted some of the entries before realizing it was too big of a mess to cleanup in the 5 minutes I have before bedtime.

Ironic

I've read that Morissette knew none of the situations she sang about in "ironic" were ironic, and that's what's ironic about the song. 72.57.44.16 23:13, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Waterandsewerbill

Actually, Morissette addresses that issue directly on her iTunes originals album. She relates an anecdote involving someone asking her if the real irony of the song is that there are no ironies in it, which she then admits is the real irony of the song, attributing the oversight to her flakiness. --Jtalledo (talk) 03:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Well she would say that, wouldn't she? The fact that there are no ironies in the song doesn't necessarily make the song ironic. So she actually misunderstands irony twice. Forgivable in an American, but she surely lets down Canada in this instance.

Discography section

Well, 203.26.122.12 (talk · contribs) has chosen to revert me again, so here goes. I'd already split much of the discography info to Alanis Morissette discography because the article was getting long. I removed the excess number of fair use images (ones that are not under a free license) that were in a gallery because Wikipedia:Fair use criteria states, "The amount of copyrighted work used should be as little as possible ... Do not use multiple images or media clips if one will serve the purpose adequately.", and "The material must contribute significantly to the article (e.g. identify the subject of an article, or specifically illustrate relevant points or sections within the text) and must not serve a purely decorative purpose." It doesn't matter if other articles use the same format - the point is that they shouldn't. Also, the images had no fair use rationale on their description pages. Finally, excluding chart positions in Canada for Morissette's albums, when she is a Canadian musician, is extremely odd. Extraordinary Machine 17:09, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Category clutter

Alanis Morissette currently has the distinction of having the second most number of categories of any article in Wikipedia following George H. W. Bush. The categories at the bottom of the page are a block of difficult-to-read links that are difficult to read or use.

One option I see is the consolidate the "Canadian X" and "American X" categories, such as Category:Canadian rock singers and Category:American rock singers. Since Morissette is now American by nationality and since the categories are for grouping people by nationality, I would suggest that all of her categories be switched to their American conterparts. Do other people object to this? If not, I will do so in a few days. Dr. Submillimeter 11:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Do you mean to swtich them all from things like "Canadian Buddhists" and "American Buddists" to "Canadian-American Buddists?" If you were going to do that, do it. Acalamari 19:46, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking of switching things like "Canadian Buddhist" to "American Buddhist". Would that be OK, or would it cause problems? Dr. Submillimeter 12:48, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Since she is Canadian by birth, but lives over here in the United States, I was thinking that "Canadian-American" would be more appropriate. Acalamari 22:33, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Categories like "Canadian-American Buddhist" do not exist in Wikipedia. If they did, they would be deleted. Anyhow, Alanis has now beaten George H. W. Bush as the top article for category clutter. The categories really need to be compressed. I will do this on 12 Jan 2006 unless I receive strong objections. Dr. Submillimeter 11:10, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
but does the article belong in all the catagories? Their is the problem that she is yet another Canadian who is famous in the states (YACWFITS) and so she appers in many catagories that are american as well as the simalar Canadian Catagory, but they are both valid catagories for the article to appear.
Lets put it this way, lets say it were to turn out that she got a patent on a new invention - it would be logical to ADD the catagory(s) Canadian/american Inventors would it not? SO if it is logical that the article belongs in teh other catagories, they should stay unless the catagories themselves are not valid IMHO cmacd 13:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

OK, I do not have consensus for these actions, so I will not touch the categories. However, the categories for this article are an inpenetrable mass of links in my web browsers. The categories need clean-up if they are going to be useful for navigation. Dr. Submillimeter 10:03, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I wonder if there is a way to deal with this at the catagory level itself? This is what a programer would call an edge case, as the subject of the article happens to fit many catagories cmacd 13:59, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
It makes more sense to put "Canadian-American." I have seen categories like "English-American," so I see no reason not to put "Canadian-American." Acalamari 17:49, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong with having so many?? Doesnt being on the top of the list attract more readers?? - TKELLY02

Categories

Whilst I do note the above discussion, the number of categories is ridiculous, particularly when many of them are duplicates. I have removed a bunch of categories, leaving 26. Ones removed are:

Duplicates:

  • Canadian rock musicians - Canadian rock singers is a subset of this, should not be in both
  • Canadian songwriters - Canadian singer-songwriters is a subset of this, no need to be in both
  • American songwriters - is in American singer-songwriters
  • CJOH - is in CJOH people, a subset of this

Unnecessary/wrong

  • Degrassi / CYE / Nip/Tuck / You Can't Do That On Television Actors - appearing on a show once / occasionally
  • Crossover (music) / Rhythmic Top 40 acts - too vague
  • Hungarian-Americans - nope

No such category

  • Canadian immigrants to America

Personally, I am also tempted to remove the 'Canadian singer' / 'Canadian diarist' sort of categories as she's now an American citizen (thus revoking her Canadian citizenship), but retain "Hungarian Canadian", "Franco-Ottawan" etc as they refer to her heritage. I will leave that one to you guys. Categories are a useful tool in Wikipedia, but 49 (more than George Bush!) is crazy. Proto:: 10:37, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Taking out citizenship in a forengn country does NOT revoke Canadian Citizenship. Any oaths of revokation that are part of a forign citizenship process are NOT racognized by Canada. The only way to revoke canadian citizenship is to go though a formal process - Like Conrad Black. Since She has AFAIK not done. I understand that it bothers some americans to no end that folks can have Canadian dual citizenship.
As far as "you can't do that on televison", this was her first major TV Break, and the show is at least partly famous from her presence. I will put that one back.cmacd 14:29, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Okay, no problem. If there's an decent reason for a ctegory, great. But the other TV categories shouldn't be re-added. Proto:: 14:43, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

A note on GA status

I see that this article was at one time a Featured article or FA candidate. However, the article is not listed as a Good Article . As part of the Rock music WikiProject, it is suggested that an article achieve Good Article (GA) status before having it's candidacy re-newed. So be sure that points from any previous Features article candidate (FAC) archives and peer reviews are taken and applied to the article, and shoot for a GA nomination. Good luck! -- Reaper X 22:33, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Commendable attitude

While hosting the Juno Awards in April 2004, Morissette "exposed" herself on Canadian television by appearing on stage in a robe that simulated a naked body, and stating that Canadians "live in a land where we still think the human body is beautiful and we're not afraid of the female breahttp://wiki.riteme.site/skins-1.5/common/images/button_bold.pngst." Alanis' attitude toward the human race is one to commend. The rocker says she has so many homosexual pals that she wanted to pay tribute to them, and therefore she changed the line in hit song "Ironic" from "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful wife" to "Meeting the man of my dreams, and then meeting his beautiful husband". She is quoted as saying on website Contactmusic.com: "I have so many friends who are homosexual who I just adore. Anytime I can support the gay community in whatever way, I will." Morissette also shared a kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City.

She declared in regard to her music that the purpose is to make people react to it, to feel touched by it, to love or hate it, as she sees that as one of the goals of her art. The singer is well known for her quote "I want to walk through life instead of being dragged through it."

Engagement breakup

I moved all this material together and revised it slightly. I'm not sure that the earlier reports from 2006 should be there at all, as there is no evidence that they had any substance. Gossip magazines are not reliable sources and we are not in the business of giving them credence or spreading their rumours. Still, since they did actually break up recently, I haven't entirely deleted it. Metamagician3000 01:36, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, but we said it was reported that the prss said it in 206, they did. Why would it matter if they broke up or not?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.38.227.20 (talkcontribs) 08:30, April 4, 2007.

Seriously, why does this matter? It's enough to say she was with the guy and they broke up. Or not say anything. This whole article is way too long on the random material as it is. Sarah511 (talk) 12:45, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Sarah511

Jagged Little Pill/Ballard controversy

The comment about the "attack" on Morissette isn't very clear. What was the nature of the attack on the collaboration? I remember hearing things at the time alluding to Ballard's substantial contribution to th lyrics and that this made it less "real" (considering that the lyrics were full of female-angst). I'm sure that these rumors have been set straight as we're saying as fact that Alanis wrote "all" the lyrics, but perhaps we could clarify this thought--and perhaps back up the attribution of her writing all the lyrics and "much of the album's music" (the latter being somewhat debatable). Also, I took out the following phrase that was supposed to be another argument for why the "attack" was unfounded because it seems moot point: "and such a collaboration was not uncommon for many solo artists at the time." What kind of collaboration? Most artists have a collaborative producer; that's common knowledge and thus, isn't a valid argument. The bottom line is that this bit of info needs to be more specific. And I think it would be quite valuable for the article. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I didn't have much luck finding details about this little controversy. Citizenship

The grammar and formatting of the first sentence could be improved. I propose:

Alanis Nadine Morissette (born in Ottawa, 1 June 1974) is a Canadian and naturalized American singer-songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress, who ranks among the top selling recording artists in history.

I think the terminology is sound. I just think "Canadian- with US citizenship-" (is incorrect, technically speaking) and sounds and looks absolutely bizarre. Thoughts? Justen 06:08, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

The American word is too general. America is too big and has many countries. Is Alanis Argentinian, Méxican or Brazilian, or US? and the list of possible countries continues.... there are 3 americas: North, Central and South. US is more concise. RFI200.125.113.187 05:34, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
From the United States article: The most common adjectival and demonymic form for the United States is American. This term is used for U.S. citizens living abroad, and for cultural characteristics ("American language," "American sports") and is rarely (at least not in English) used to refer to people not connected to the U.S. The word "American" has been especially controversial in Latin America, where Spanish speakers refer to themselves as "americanos" and use the adjective "estadounidense" to describe a person from the United States. Since we're talking about the English-language Wikipedia article, I'm not sure that there's too much ambiguity that "American" means "United States citizen." Obviously, the Alanis article on es.wikipedia might need some other verbage? Any thoughts? Justen 06:48, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
That's great and all, but the wikipedia article for America and American are disambiguation pages that both have the Americas listed as their first example. The fact that the U.S. does not have a demonym referring specifically to their population does not mean that you can (or should) use the demonym for something else as theirs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.95.24.76 (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

If you had read the article attached, to MSNBC. You would see that she is NOT naturalized; she has DUAL citizenship. Naturalized would mean she was no longer Canadian in almost anyway. Therefor, that makes her a Canadian-American. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.12.185.94 (talk) 02:30, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

I don't think it's dual citizenship, which is reserved for special cases. I think you can only become a naturalized citizen by giving up your other citizenship. Landroo (talk) 00:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

It is dual citizenship, she pronounced that phrase on Howard Stern show in 2004. She sais she was getting one. — Cannot (talk) 13:18, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Landroo what you "think" has no relevance here. Wikipedia is predicated on facts, not a mix of personal opinion and speculation. You can be a naturalized citizen of the US and maintain Canadian citizenship. I am a dual citizen of both nations by birth.(24.62.224.219 (talk) 17:15, 23 December 2010 (UTC))

So are her brothers dead or was the wrong verb form used?

Yeah, her brothers are both dead. They died in a tragic road traffic accident involving cows.

Text for "My Humps"

I removed the following sentence from the text on "My Humps":

"It ended up becoming a big hit and she didn't expect that at all."

since it is unverified and not in the tone of an encyclopedia article.

There are also some unverified statements in that passage that need to be referenced. 24.151.79.108 05:33, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Buddhist?

As I travel around the internet I keep seeing references to Alanis Morissette as "Buddhist". Wikipedia has done the same, it seems, by putting her into "Canadian Buddhists" and "Converts to Buddhism" categories.

Has Alanis Morissette ever actually said she's Buddhist? I doubt it, I don't think she ascribes to any particular religion. I think inclusion into the above categories should be removed, right away.

She's still Catholic, at least she still was in 2004. I don't think she had a Catholic marriage in 2010, though, as there were voiced/written objections to her marriage in 2004.207.151.38.178 (talk) 00:48, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Tone of the article is biased

The overall tone of the article is very biased in favor of Morrisette with such phrases as "Many fans love..." this and "Many fans enjoy.." that. These emotional statements need to be rephrased in a more neutral manner. The Wiki is supposed to be a information resource, not a marketing tool.

Plagiarism

Personal Life section contains a large block of text from http://caringonline.com/eatdis/celebrities_a.html -- either they stole from wiki, or wiki took from there or another site with the same content.

From that web page: "As the Ottawa native confesses in the July 4 issue of Us Weekly, between the ages of 14 and 18 she battled low self-esteem that sparked a major struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Morissette -- speaking to the magazine while promoting the 10th anniversary acoustic release of her breakthrough album Jagged Little Pill -- says her battle was prompted by "hardcore" pressure from those steering her career. ... Morissette said at the time her weight jumped up and down between 15 and 20 pounds. She would barely eat for months at a time, subsisting on Melba toast, carrots and black coffee."

Awards and nominations

I have recently started to completely reorganize List of awards and nominations received by Alanis Morissette, but I have noticed that the task is getting a bit too big for me to complete. So far, I have made the info box listing the nominations and awards she has received, and completed the American Music Awards section. I'm stuck on the Grammy Awards, section, however. Any help at all on editing this article would be greatly appreciated! I would love to see it reach feautred status, and with hard work and persistance, it will happen. Orientation

The personal life section mentions 'past lesbian relationships', but doesn't state how long ago they were. Is she now bi or ex-gay? Nietzsche 2 (talk) 22:00, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Probably ex-gay. Were she attracted to women to any major extent she would have probably had a girlfriend or two in the X number of years she's been in the limelight. And, judging by her personality, she doesn't seem like the type of person that would "stay in the closet" so to speak. 64.180.93.200 (talk) 14:17, 8 February 2009 (UTC)
She's what you might say Elton Johnesque: sometimes gay, sometimes heterosexual. And yes, I know she's married, but wait til the real Alanis comes out. The fact that she has been dating environmental lawyer Tom Ballanco since 2007 has been mysteriously removed and... inserted... with the same reference that was originally for that fact (REF POINT #22 - see list), I believe... has been introduced a new fact that she has been dating a Jason Samples...?... and apparently has a child with him??!? Poppycock... someone should change this, or simply revert it back to the original, valid, truth.

CORRECTION

It is mentioned in the introduction and discography that alnis is the highest selling debut album. But actually it is not possible as she has already recorded 2 album before. It is BRITNEY SPEARS who has the record for hogest selling album for BABY ONE MMORE TIME. Guiness has even certified it. ALthogh JAGGED LITTLE PILL solf more than BABYN ONE MORE ITME, it was not alanis' first and debut album. Why is Jagged Little Pill listed as her debut album

Does changing her performing name really erase those albums from existence? Its not like a band undergoing a lineup change and calling themselves something new ala Rage against the Machine + Chris Cornell = Audioslave, and we consider them a new entity. This is the same person.Max.inglis (talk) 21:13, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

We should go for clarity, and what a typical reader might expect to see. If some substantial portion of Wiki readers see the "before and after" name as the same entity, the article should at least make it very easy to see there is other information elsewhere. Post-grunge?

Is there a notable source which asserts that Alanis Morissette's music is/was significantly enough influenced by grunge to warrant the "post-grunge" genre label? The article doesn't really go over this influence, and perhaps it should if it is to label her work as such. I am by no means an exert on either this singer or the grunge genre, but I know enough about both to question the classification. A sourced elaboration would improve the article significantly. Without a source the classification might be classed as original research. 24.184.234.197 (talk) 10:58, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

just go to allmusic.com and look at her bio... you can see it. also if you look for the info of post-grunge on allmusic.com you will see a list of top albums, singers and songs (all post-grunge) and Alanis Morissette appears as one of the top bands/singers, and some of her albums and songs appears on the top that allmusic give —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.248.229.100 (talk) 02:10, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Canadian?

Why would a cite be needed that she is Canadian? Is it not sure she was born is Ottawa? If not, I think the cite-needed-tag should be placed there instead. 85.217.36.71 (talk) 20:05, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

And actually the "Personal life" section has a sentence: Morissette became an American citizen in 2005, while maintaining her Canadian citizenship. with a source, so I think the citation needed must be deleted from the header ASAP. 85.217.36.71 (talk) 20:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
No, the lead is supposed to summarize the article. Such a statement is needed in the lead. Yworo (talk) 01:54, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
The most appropriate way to correct the mistake is to introduce the line: "Alanis Morissette is a Canadian-American...". The fact that she is Canadian is subtly implied considering she was born in Canada and that Canada is a jus solis nation. The fact that would help readers with the article summary would be to introduce the fact that she is also American, explaining later that it was through naturalization rather than jus sanguinis. It could also be helpful to link the naturalization link to the article on citizenship laws of the United States since it will say that the US allows dual citizenship. --- Loukinho (talk) 23:12, 8 June 2012 (UTC).
I agree and it's important that she considers herself Canadian-American: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6986872/ --Cannot (talk) 12:53, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Furthermore there has been some issues with some editor arguing that somehow WP:OPENPARA is being violated. I am requesting the help of much more experienced users to help us understand why a subject who is still notable to this day is treated at will as if she was a subject that had only achieved notability in the past, before 2005. I thought OPENPARA clearly stated that the use of citizenship or nationality should be included and only in the case of people notable primarily for past events is that the context should be re-adjusted. I am possibly missing something here and probably any of her albums after 2005 should have their own articles on wikipedia, considering that, much like the singer, she can no longer be considered notable after 2005. But then again, who am I other than just a random editor with no authority, right? -- Loukinho (talk) 19:11, 12 June 2012 (UTC).
What you are missing is that we simply do not use compound nationalities, because they are read differently by different speakers of English (British vs. American vs. Australian, etc.). "Canadian American" is ambiguous: in some forms of English it means an American-born person with Canadian ancestry, which is not accurate. Therefore, we use the nationality held at the time the subject became notable in the lead sentence, and mention any addition nationalitake the article inaccurate for a subset of readers. Just don't use a compound term. Yworo (talk) 23:27, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Wait, you just changed your discourse now. Please show me where in the wikipedia policies you got this from. WP:OPENPARA is very clear in stating that the country in which the person is a citizen or permanent resident should be used in the lead sentence unless the subject was notable mainly for past events (For instance, you can't say that Josip Broz Tito was Croatian because back when he was notable, Yugoslavia was his country of citizenship). Please refer to the article Canadian American for the meaning used on wikipedia. Please explain to me how this article is different from Jim Carrey or any other Canadian-Born American citizen as far as citizenship is concerned. -- Loukinho (talk) 00:49, 3 July 2012 (UTC).
According to that article, both meanings apply.
Sure, it starts with A Canadian American is someone who was born or grew up in Canada then moved to the United States.
But, the opening chapter ends with this: To others, especially for those living in New England or the Mid-Western States, a Canadian-American is one whose ancestors came from Canada. 85.217.34.67 (talk) 19:38, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
