Alaca (pronounced "alaja")

[edit]

From the page:

The "j" in Pertti Alaja's surname is pronounced /j/ as in "year". It is not pronounced /dz/ as in "joke". Therefore this "pronounced alaja" thing is misleading because the letter "c" in "Alaca" is pronounced quite differently from the letter "j" in Pertti Alaja's surname. In my opinion, the link should be removed. JIP | Talk 20:55, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Imagine an average English-speaking person, who doesn't know anything about Turkish orthography. If that person has heard, but not read, of a place in Turkey called [alad͡ʒa], and comes here looking for it, what search term do you think they're going to use? – Uanfala (talk) 21:03, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What I'm trying to say here it's quite misleading to write "pronounced alaja" on the same page where a person called Alaja whose name is not pronounced like that is mentioned. The way the article is written, the reader is going to think Pertti Alaja's surname is also pronounced [alad͡ʒa] which it quite definitely is not. JIP | Talk 21:17, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The current version of the dab page only states that Alaca is pronounced like alaja, the assumption being that it's the usual English pronunciations of each letter here. It makes no commitments about how Pertti Alaja's surname is pronounced. But if you still see the presence of this bit of text as misleading, feel free to replace it with IPA. – Uanfala (talk) 21:28, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
