PAF Ranks

[edit]

I have removed the link to the PAF's ranks as it just leads to a page under construction. By all means put the link back when the external page is complete. (Note - It would be better to put such a link under External Links or References). 88.105.139.27 00:08, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 16 September 2021

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Not moved. Consensus that the rank remains the primary topic. (non-admin closure) BilledMammal (talk) 13:14, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Air marshalAir marshal (military rank) – This does not seem to be a proper PRIMARYTOPIC. "Air marshal" is also an alternative name for a Sky marshal, such as a member of the Federal Air Marshal Service. Both of those other articles get more page views than this one. Federal Air Marshal Service gets more than twice as many page views. It could also be confused with Marshal of the Air Force. — BarrelProof (talk) 03:57, 16 September 2021 (UTC) — Relisting.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:11, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. Clear primary topic. A rank used in the air forces of most Commonwealth countries. Only America seems to use the other version, and sky marshal appears to be commoner in normal speech anyway even with that. Long-term significance clearly favours the rank, which has been in existence for over a century. Funnily enough, it isn't confused with marshal of the air force in the countries which use both as separate ranks! And since they're both military ranks anyway, I fail to see how the proposed disambiguator would make any difference. -- Necrothesp (talk) 12:07, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It may be true that the term "air marshal" is used for sky marshals only or primarily in the United States. However, the United States is a pretty large part of the English-speaking world, and its usage should not be discounted. — BarrelProof (talk) 05:47, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
However, if we always went with American usage as primary this would be going against WP:ENGVAR. That's not how we do things in Wikipedia. Numerous countries use the rank of air marshal (including not-insignificant countries such as the UK, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, much of Africa, Australia, New Zealand and formerly Canada). Only the United States commonly uses it for the other definition, and even there another term is probably more common. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:10, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Creating Air marshal (disambiguation) does not seem particularly difficult. — BarrelProof (talk) 05:47, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. I was more seeking input as to whether it is a good idea. Andrewa (talk) 20:13, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If this article is not moved, creating that might be unnecessary. — BarrelProof (talk) 23:42, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
