Early life

[edit]

According to Imran himself, he was born in the Mal police station area of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal.[1]

Career

[edit]

According to a report in the Anandabazar Patrika, in 1975-76 Imran founded West Bengal Muslim Students Association.[2] On 24 April 1977, Imran co-founded the Students Islamic Movement of India in Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh. Imran became the president of the West Bengal unit of the organization and held the position till 1980.[2] After relinquishing the position, Imran remained an organizer and spokesperson of the organization till it was banned in 2001. He setup the office of SIMI in Dargah Road in the Park Circus area of Kolkata. In 1981, he started publishing Kalom as the monthly Bengali mouthpiece of SIMI. Kalom continued to be published as a monthly till 1994.[2]

According to the report, as a result of SIMI's growth in West Bengal, Imran became popular in the Islamist circles.[2] He was appointed as the board member of the Jeddah based Islamic Development Bank to oversee the affairs of the eastern zone. Mamul al Azam, who is the Managing Director of Islamic Development Bank, is the son of Ghulam Azam, a convicted war criminal of Bangladesh and retired leader of Jamaat-e-Islami. According to Indian intelligence reports, Imran is very close to Mamul ul Azam.[3] Soon after his appointment as the board member of the IDB, Imran converted Kalom into a weekly. In 1998, he converted Kalom into a daily.[2] At this time he shifted the office of SIMI and Kalom from Park Circus to 45, Eliot Road. The erstwhile office at 19, Dargah Road became a hideout of the SIMI cadres.[2] Apart from being the editor of Kalom, Imran also acted as the India correspondent of a Jamaat-e-Islami controlled Bengali daily named Naya Diganta published from Bangladesh.[2] His articles were published regularly in Naya Diganta. He also acted as the news gatherer for Bengali division of Radio Tehran. In 2011, he sold Kalom to Sudipta Sen, the CEO of Saradha Group.[4]

Controversy

[edit]

Ahmed Hassan Imran is allegedly involved in 2007 Kolkata riots and 2013 Canning riots which is presently investigated by the CBI.[5] However, Imran denied the charges and filed a defamation case against BJP's state observer Siddharth Nath Singh.[6] Meanwhile, Trinamool leader Subrata Mukherjee in a statement said, "An investigation will be conducted. If anything is proven then he will be punished. But why label Imran a criminal before that?" In response, BJP's state observer Siddharthnath Singh said, "It would be great if they move the court. Attacking Imran only because he belongs to a minority community is out of question. He is involved in treason. That's why he is being criticised,".[7]

Investigations

[edit]

The National Investigation Agency and CBI have taken up the probe into the allegations that Trinamool Congress MP Ahmed Hassan Imran had sent Saradha funds to Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh to create unrest in Bangladesh.[8][9] While the investigation is still going on, both NIA and CBI reported that their probes had not found any such links.[10][11] However, CBI also reported that the complete details of investments and fund transfers were still under investigation.[10]
