Adverse effect vs. Adverse effect (medicine)

[edit]

Since adverse effect redirects to adverse effect (medicine), is there any reason why the latter can't be moved to the former? The purpose of medicine in parentheses is to distinguish it from other uses of the term. But there are no other uses of the term. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.126.59.104 (talk) 06:13, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In Australia 'Adverse EVENT' refers generically to medical errors of all kinds, surgical, medical or nursing related. The most recent available official study (1995) indicates 18,000 deaths per year as a result of hospital care. The Medical Error Action Group is lobbying for legislation to improve the reporting of AE's and through quality control, minimize the needless deaths. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.12.211.35 (talk) 03:36, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the U.S., the term, as defined within the article would refer to an "adverse event" and not "adverse effect." Also, since a serious adverse event is a subset of an adverse event, as defined by the FDA, the Serious Adverse Event article should be a part of the Adverse Event article. Mattsnod (talk) 22:00, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adverse effects are a subcategory of a larger concept of adverse events. Part of the intent of the article is to clarify that adverse effects and adverse events are not interchangeable. Adverse effects are subjective - events believed by investigators to be related to exposure. Events are harmful outcomes that are unattributed.

I would support bringing this into a larger category of adverse events

Dhusereau (talk) 15:05, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree. "Adverse event" is a legal/regulatory term whose meaning exists in the context of a body of rules and regulations by which health authorities regulate clinical trials and the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. The legal/regulatory context and the governmental organizations and systems addressing it deserve attention separately from the medical context. It would be a bit like trying to merge insanity defense with insanity, or murder with death. --207.245.44.238 (talk) 16:42, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adverse Events (AEs) and Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) are two types of the same general concept. A relatable example would be an allergy attack and anaphylaxis. One reaction is of more detrimental variety of the other. Adverse effects are often human error in a clinical setting or actual errors in use. An Adverse Effect in a clinical setting may be a skin reaction - a Serious Adverse Event would be a skin reaction that sends a patient to the hospital due to severity. I would recommend merging Serious Adverse Event (SAE) with Adverse Event (AE) and having a redirecting link from SAE to the main AE page. Pm 624 (talk) 05:46, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This entire article is written without a single WP:RS. (The one link is dead.)

I propose we blank it and start all over again with a WP:RS. Otherwise it would be a good candidate for deletion. --Nbauman (talk) 17:22, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge, eg with adverse event

[edit]

The following articles have been proposed for merge for over two years:

It seems there is consensus above to merge these three articles, so I have begun this process. LT90001 (talk) 07:06, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As serious adverse event and adverse event and this article appear to be synonymous, I have completed the merge. As adverse drug reaction is well fleshed-out, and not synonymous (refers specifically to drugs), I have not merged it into this article. LT90001 (talk) 07:15, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merging these articles was a very bad idea as it serves to aggrevate an already-existing problem in the medical community - namely a lack of awareness of the difference between 'adverse effects' and 'adverse events'. This confusion has served to introduce performance bias into clinical trials and reduce perceptions of harm for years. I am not sure how two completely separate concepts could have been merged but I lack the know-how to propose a re-separation. Dhusereau (talk) 14:20, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree 100%. I have removed the merge template from adverse event. Hopefully the articles will now properly develop separately. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 07:42, 8 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adverse effect is different from adverse event

[edit]

Adverse event is a term used in clinical research which is very well defined and has lot of implications. I would suggest to have a different article for it. Thanks. -- Abhijeet Safai (talk) 08:00, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Trade names really needed in the list of Examples ?

[edit]

Should we really include trade names in the list “Examples of adverse effects associated with specific medications”? As it stands now, the list is inconsistent. Some active ingredients have an associated trade name within brackets, others not. Sometimes the same active ingredient appears several times (like sildenafil) and has a trade name mention in one place but not in the other. Since all active ingredients mentioned in this article also have their own articles (on which often trade names are mentioned) I think we should remove the trade names from here. Mycklan (talk) 15:33, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see no harm in the trade names but am not sure of the purpose of an alphabetical list here. It might be better as a table in a separate article - with sortable columns for date licenced, and magnitude of the harm caused, and when licencing body (eg FDA) mandated extra warnings ? Is the point of this list to highlight adverse effects only identified after approval ?

"Drugs contain side effects ..."

[edit]

Article has "Drugs contain side effects which is the reason why commercials or advertisements put many disclaimers about the unwanted symptoms after taking the drug(s)." - The first 4 words need rewording, but perhaps we should just delete the whole sentence ? - Rod57 (talk) 14:19, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
