"Best Ever"
[edit]I have removed the citation request from this line from the lead: "This serial is often regarded as one of the best ever created." This is covered in the Critical reception section of the article. I can duplicate the reference if necessary but I didn't think this was required for the lead section (as it is just a summary of the article itself). - AdamBMorgan (talk) 16:29, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
WP:FILM B-class review request
[edit]This article was asked to be reviewed to determine if it meets the B-class criteria. I have made some edits myself throughout the article, but I think it needs a few additional fixes before reaching B-class:
- "The film company approached Fawcett Comics for their most popular character, and that publishing house did not refuse." Could this be written better? I'm not sure what this statement means.
- "The much cheaper Columbia Pictures Superman serials..." Do you have a source for their lower budget? Without one, it may seem like POV is being used here.
- The article is well-sourced, but further sourcing will be needed to be granted B-class status. Source any statements that may be questioned by the reader and try to expand the sections that are currently brief. If you need further references, try and include some online ones, making sure they're reliable.
- If you can, consider adding a production photo of the Captain Marvel dummy used in flight or a notable screenshot of the film that illustrates something in the production section.
Mainly, this article just needs some more expansion and a few more references. Look at the template within the film banner on this talk page (by clicking "show" within the banner). There you will find instructions on what needs to be done to meet B-class status. If you think it then meets the criteria feel free to reassess the article yourself using the checklist or contact me (or the assessment page) and I'll take another look at the article. Good work so far and keep it up. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 05:22, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
Costume color
[edit]Back on July 31, 2008, an anonymous IP added a passage, uncited to this day, that the costume was actually gray, rather than the red of the comic books. However, somewhere (IIRC, The Great Movie Serials, by Jim Harmon and Don Glut, Doubleday, 1973) made a statement about people on the set and jokes about how star Tom Tyler looked in the "red" suit. If someone with access to a copy will please check and find it in the chapter on this serial, we will have a citable source contrary to this unsourced passage. In the meantime, I will place a cite request tag on it. --Tbrittreid (talk) 19:37, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
In Seattle, Washington, at Bill Gates' Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, there is an exhibit of an actual tunic worn by Tom Tyler or a stuntman in this serial. It is gray. I personally have seen this exhibit and can vouch. Here is a picture of the tunic taken by another visitor:

It seems to me that eye-witness testimony plus a photo beat the dim recollections of geriatric studio people who worked on hundreds of these low budget pics. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Flapdoodle64159.121.27.3 (talk) 21:22, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
