To add to article

[edit]

If there's as yet no English-language Wikipedia article about Samir Ousman al-Sheikh, shouldn't we add a mention of his arrest by U.S. officials in July 2024? Lead section talks about this prison in the past tense

[edit]

The lead section talks about this prison in the past tense, saying: "Adra Prison ... was a prison in Syria, .... " Should Wikipedia write about this prison in this way? According to the Manual of Style, Wikipedia articles should be written in the present tense, by default. The prison still exists and was taken over by the new regime, with the prisoners being liberated, but that doesn't mean it has closed. While it might no longer be operational, it has not been officially closed, yet. According to Reuters, the prisons in Syria are now open for former prisoners to visit their former cells and anyone can visit and inspect these prisons. It has been announced the prisons will close, but that is in the future. What use will be made of then once they are closed remains to be seen. But they still exist so Wikipedia should say "is", not "was". Also, compare with similar articles about other Syrian prisons, Mezzeh prison - now defunct uses present tense, Tadmor Prison - captured and destroyed - uses past tense.
