Planform

How is changing dihedral classified as a thing that alters the planform of the wing? Planform is the outline in the horizontal plane, dihedral is in the vertical plane. The only effect it would have on planform is a very tiny apparent change in span as the angle changes. You can't tell if an aircraft has dihedral or not when seen in a planform view, and my understanding is that is what the meaning of that word is: plan-form, the form as it is seen drawn on the paper.
