[edit]

can anyone post more information about where she was born, where she studied etc.?

As far as I know, she has acted only in three movies.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.213.164.209 (talk) 15:43, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Birth name

[edit]

{{BLP noticeboard}} There is a clearly dispute between sources as to what her birth name is. WP:SYNTH occurs when trying to handwave that away by putting our own analysis in to the subject matter.

My effort was to neutrally show this by a footnote, which should have been hardly problematic as that is how discrepancies are resolved hereon WP, but some users think otherwise.

Also linking this to the WP:BLPNOTICE for further insight. Gotitbro (talk) 03:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As for this comment, her WP:COMMONNAME is obviously going to be displayed here, the birth name she claims in another interview (Adah Sarma, variant spelling) has also been put in the note. And stating that sources differ as to her birthname is fact (please take a look at what WP:SYNTH actually says). Gotitbro (talk) 03:47, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gotitbro, apart from the note, should her real name not be mentioned anywhere? What is the rule? I observed that the article on Mahesh Bhatt mentions his real name only in the, "personal life" section while it is in the lead for the Dilip Kumar article.-1Firang (talk) 10:13, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If the birthname of a person is definitively known it can go in the lead.
The issue here is that we are not sure what Adah Sharma's birthname actually is. In the extensive article by TOI which focuses solely on that aspect she mentions Adah Sarma (the different surname spelling and its change to Sharma also being covered in the TOI article) as her birthname but in a recent interview she has stated otherwise (Chamundeshwari Iyer) in a passing remark. Since the person has herself provided conflicting information, the standard practice is to mention that through notes and not prefer one information over the other (unless say we have absolutely authoritative such as government records), the BLPNOTICE also tends to agree with me on this (see the discussion there). Gotitbro (talk) 10:43, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thetazero: See the discussion WP:BLPNOTICE as well. You need to engage and gain WP:CONSENSUS here rather than WP:EDITWAR per WP:BRD. We don't go purportedly in the lead itself, using notes is one of the most neutral ways to mention such things if conflicted by sources themselves. Unless you can ask the actress herself to resolve this (Tweet/Interview et al) no birthname (either Sarma/Iyer) is going to find place in the WP:LEAD. Gotitbro (talk) 13:50, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, please undo the edit-warning you gave in my talk page. I got the message.
Now coming to the topic. People have multiple names and in India it is very common. For this reason- the information is not disputed or contradictory. A name is not a DOB - it does not have to be unique. And the source seems reliable as it came from her own mouth. Since you have problem with the name being in the LEAD as a birth name, I am adding it as an alias in the info-box. I hope you have no problems this time.
Also, the whole notion of commonname seems arbitrary. Who decides that 'North Korea' should be commonname and not 'DPR Korea'? As a senior editor, may be you can teach me. Thetazero (talk) 17:31, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thetazero: Birthnames are the ones on the birthrecord i.e. what the person was born with, this is universal (names can be many, birthnames cannot). In the present case the person has herself stated that birthname with contradictory statements. And one statement of her birthname cannot go over the other in lead or infobox. I will not be reverting the alias parameter (though that is generally reserved for names used in a person's work etc).
COMMONAME is a standard guideline, reflected in the article's title itself (as is the case here). It is based on what WP:RELIABLESOURCES refer to the person as predominantly, in your case the general/common and dominant usage is "North Korea" not "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" or for the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" just "United Kingdom" is the general/common usage.
As for the warning you are free to remove it from your User Talkpage, though if it stays other editors will know that you are aware of the guidelines and not serve you the warning (incorrectly) again. Gotitbro (talk) 18:38, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of IPA of her name

[edit]

Kwamikagami, with this revert, you have removed the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) of her name, but please self revert the same. It is not possible to cite references for rare names.-1Firang (talk) 06:20, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Then it's not possible to include it on WP. We do not allow WP:OR. It's pretty much claiming her name is pronounced "huzzah!", which I find doubtful. I checked YouTube to see if I could find anything, but was unsuccessful. — kwami (talk) 06:25, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kwamikagami Please check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GMxuJlKWts.-1Firang (talk) 06:36, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For those of you who are wondering why the IPA of her name was removed, please see the arguments at Help_talk:IPA/Sanskrit#Consensus - you may want to go and comment there also.-1Firang (talk) 06:41, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The YouTube clip completely contradicts the IPA transcription I deleted, so probably a good thing I deleted it. But it sounds like a computer-generated pronunciation, and those things are completely unreliable. — kwami (talk) 06:44, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's unreliable but just for people to pronounce her name correctly, should we not use the IPA?-1Firang (talk) 06:47, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How can they pronounce her name correctly if we don't know that the pronunciation is correct?
If you know that is pronounced correctly, then it would be something like /əˈdɑː ˈʃɑːrmə/ — kwami (talk) 06:53, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to the English IPA Help page, it should be (/ˈʌðɑː ʃʌrmɑː/).-1Firang (talk) 07:02, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That page says nothing about her name, but "/ʃʌrmɑː/" isn't even possible in English.
Anyway, if you find a RS for her name, let me know. (Unless you can confirm that the link you gave is the correct pronunciation?) — kwami (talk) 07:08, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy

[edit]

@Sunuraju: WP:CSECTIONs (sections dedicated to controversies) should never exist on WP:BLPs, any content about controversies is better incorporated into the rest of the article (in other sections). But as is clear from the sources, the comments are not going to have any lasting impact, and since Wikipedia is WP:NOTNEWS they should not be inserted into the article. You reinserted the section without any explanation despite the policy being cited in the edit summary in the earlier removal.

Also this is clearly WP:OR and somewhat disruptive, as the source clearly notes she was the only saving grace of the film. Neither does our article on Bastar: The Naxal Story note any particular criticism about her performance. If a significant number of sources negatively criticize her in the film add them (I dont see that) but please do not add unsourced contentious stuff into BLPs.
