Tuned mass damper is one possible example of an active structure which warrants mentioning. 98.232.21.23 (talk) 01:41, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, this article needs an overhaul and possibly disambiguation. Notably, I think there are two different engineering/architecture concepts that are being mixed together here, and while they are similar, I think they're different enough to warrant separate articles.

  • Active structures in the sense of buildings or other engineered objects like aircraft which are able to reconfigure their structure and are not "static". This would include things like aircraft that change wing shape or mobile homes which can extend sides to increase living space
  • Active structures or actively supported structures seen in science fiction or futurism, where the structures are "actively supported" meaning they consume energy to maintain structural integrity. This includes things like the Space Fountain and similar megastructures.
