Spelling

[edit]

Shouldn't this article be moved to Acacia macdonnellensis? [1] --Korg (talk) 14:06, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The spelling used in the article is the same as used in the references. Hughesdarren (talk) 23:40, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Although after checking the other spelling has plenty of references too. Now I'm not sure what to do.... @Plantdrew: can you offer any advise for this? Hughesdarren (talk) 00:01, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Hughesdarren: Good question. The original spelling is Acacia macdonnelliensis, and original spellings (even if mistaken) can only be changed for a handful of reasons. Most of the sources I'd trust have it as A. macdonnellensis; the one exception is World Wide Wattles. FloraBase credits Bruce Maslin's treatment of Acacia in Flora of Australia for macdonnellensis being the preferred spelling. The problem is, Maslin is also behind World Wide Wattles, and I believe that source is more up-to-date. It appears Maslin may have changed his mind about whether correcting the original spelling is justified. I've asked about it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants#Acacia macdonnelliensis. The code of nomenclature says that original spellings should only be changed "with reserve". Macdonnelliensis would presumably be deliberate, referring to the Macdonnell ranges in the plural, and the spelling is consistent throughout the description in the original article (available here). I think that IPNI is wrong. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 22:36, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The IPNI editors have adjusted the entry, here. In email discussion this was explained as "Although the epithet 'macdonnellensis' is preferable, we need to accept the published epithet 'macdonnelliensis'. IPNI is so fundamental to other botanical databases, that the adjustment may spread in time. So this page is in the right place. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 21:01, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for following up with this. Plantdrew (talk) 04:43, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all! Korg (talk) 02:00, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
