Abyssinia page or redirect

[edit]

In my opinion this page should be kept because the Ethiopia page is talking about the modern country instead of the historical country. Abyssinia is a much more historical term. I would say this difference is similar to the Soviet Union and Russian Federation. --Merhawie 19:13, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody's saying that a page shouldn't exist, but the primary page should be a redirect. Abyssinia (term) should be created to explain the situation, but most usage of the term "Abyssinia" is simply to Ethiopia. I don't think your comparison to the USSR and Russian Federation is accurate, however, as the most frequent references to Ethiopia as Abyssinia would have come during the 1890-1942 period (so the borders would be the same); the usage of "Abyssinia" dropped off sharply before then, and creating a dichotomy between Ethiopia and Eritrea for earlier (pre-1890) usage of the term (I know this is where you probably feel it is incorrect) is inaccurate. To do so would be to create a dichotomy in the term "Cathay" (an early term for China) with regards to Taiwan, which was also then part of "Cathay." — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 19:30, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right...I still think my comparison is just as the USSR was an agglomeration of various smaller states and groups dominated by a dominant group or people...pretty much Ethiopia, but I digress...you created a REDIRECT of the page before creating the Abyssinia page, and from the way you did it, it did not look like you were going to. So either way I think this page (or change the name and have a disambiguation page) should be done. --Merhawie 19:40, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand the second part of your comment. My edit summary could have been clearer, but what are you trying to say? I think that the top of the Ethiopia page should say that "Abyssinia" redirects here, for other uses see Abyssinia (disambiguation), or something like that (with Abyssinian redirecting to Habesha people or the cat???), with an brief explanation, and a link to Abyssinia (term), Abyssinian (cat), Habesha, and maybe Habeş (Ottoman province). — ዮም | (Yom) | TalkcontribsEthiopia 19:58, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect

[edit]

This page should to Ethiopian Empire or History of Ethiopia; as the primary topic is certainly Ethiopia. Night w (talk) 22:55, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ethiopian Empire(Abyssinia) is a later empire to Aksum Kingdom(Axumite Empire)

[edit]

Please note Ethiopian Empire is dated to have existed between 1137 AD - 1974 AD. While Kingdom of Aksum is dated to have existed between 100 B.C. - 940 A.D. In addition please see Treaty of Wuchale article where in the Treaties between Abyssinia and Italy, Abyssinia is not referred to as the Aksumite Kingdom or Empire. This is equivalent to the Roman Empire not being referred to as Italy even though Italy, Spain, Sicilia, Albania are the modern countries that at one time were part of the Roman Empire. Abyssinia, Medri Bahri, Ethiopia, Eritrea are post-Aksum geopolitical states/kingdoms.CrumpPlint (talk) 21:57, 4 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, the Aksumite Empire was an earlier kingdom than the Abyssinian Empire. Soupforone (talk) 03:30, 5 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Bkonrad: Could you explain the reasoning behind your edits here today? I'm no expert on disambig and redirect conventions, but I don't think we put the disambig name at the top as you did when it's a redirect to a different name. And why did you remove the link on pars pro toto? I think that phrase is sufficiently uncommon that it merits being linked. Your one brief edit summary doesn't tell us much. Pinging Srnec as well. Eric talk 18:59, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Eric, as the disambiguation page has "(disambiguation)" in the title, that means there is is a primary topic for the term. As such the primary topic (or in this case the redirect to the primary topic goes in the opening line per MOS:DABPRIMARY. The link on pars pro toto is irrelevant for disambiguation of the term "Abyssinia" (although it probably should be spelled out more clearly rather than with jargon, but that's another matter). olderwiser 19:33, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Bkonrad: Ok, thanks for the guidance link, didn't know that. So Abyssinia is treated like Cosmonaut in the examples. As for pars pro toto, I think it should be either linked or removed. I've been reading English at what could be considered an adult level for a long time (ex æternum?), and I'd never come across that term before. Eric talk 21:37, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
