Jhanjh (2020)

[edit]

Jhanjh (2020) argues that Abhiraka was not a Kshatrapa but someone from the epical tribe of Abhiras, who had defeated the Kshatrapas and then, proclaimed his victory by using the jayatasa legend. Perhaps such revisionism sells in the backwaters of numismatic-studies in S. Asia but not unexpectedly, the argument is nonsensical. In his entire chapter, Jhanjh does not, for once, bother with the fact that three other rulers — Hospises, Hastadatta, and Higaraka/Higataka — were issuing coins with the same legend and that all of them had likely preceded Abhiraka. Unless, scholars start taking note of his arguments, his views ought to be treated as FRINGE and not mentioned in our article beyond a solitary footnote.
