Removal of Crosby name

[edit]

It's been a while, but I seem to recall from news reports at the time that the Crosby family name was dropped from event after the family objected to over-commercialization. It was originally fairly informal, an event that Bing Crosby hosted mainly for his friends, hence the moniker "Crosby Clambake". — QuicksilverT @ 20:33, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I heard the opposite, that Crosby's widow sold the name for a large sum to another event, which folded. The article could use a properly-sourced reference to the real story of the name change. 64.134.159.248 (talk) 22:34, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Explain How Combined Pro-Am scores work.

[edit]

This article needs a paragraph explaining how the team score is arrived at. For example in 2014 the Dustin Johnson / Wayne Gretzky score is given as: 62 - 68 - 69 -64 (see here: see here: http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/at-t-pebble-beach-national-pro-am/amateur-leaderboard.html) And the Dustin Johnson only score is given as: 68 - 73 - 70 -66 = 277 (See here: http://scores.espn.go.com/golf/leaderboard)

How does the Johnson / Gretzky team get a score of 62 on round 1, when Johnson shot a 68? Pgmer6809 (talk) 01:12, 10 February 2014 (UTC) pgmer6809[reply]

In a pro-am, normally the best adjusted score for each hole applies. A USGA handicap is applied to the amateurs score for each hole. e.g., if Wayne was a 9 handicap, he would get a stroke (1 stroke subtracted) on the 9 hardest holes. So, for your example, Wayne "helped" on 6 holes, where his adjusted (net) score was lower than Dustin's score. Mattman944 (talk) 01:36, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the article does say "better ball", but that won't mean much to a non-golfer. "better ball" could link to https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Four-ball_golf, but unfortunately, it doesn't discuss handicaps for amateurs.Mattman944 (talk) 02:37, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Explain How Ball Play Works

[edit]

Explain what it means by the teams play best ball and the pros play standard rounds. How does this work? Does it start the pro teeing-off, then the partner amateur teeing-off? Then say the amateur has the better drive. Does the team both hit from that spot, but the pro still hits his own ball from the poorer spot as part of the pro tournament? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrMulletman (talkcontribs) 20:39, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MrMulletman: See better ball (aka best ball) for the pro-am format; you are describing foursomes (aka alternate shot). wjematherplease leave a message... 23:54, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
