Formation date: 1939 surely?

[edit]

I see where the archived British Army website states the brigade was formed in 1938 from troops based in Egypt, but that does not seem to be supported by what other sources indicate for the brigade itself. Kind of looks like the 1938 date is to align with when it joined what would become the 7th Armoured Division. The Cavalry Brigade (Egypt), also known as the Cairo Cavalry Brigade, controlled the 7th, 8th, and 11th Hussars and was based in Egypt in 1937 (and had been there for years, link). On the January 1939 list, the Mobile Division contains Russell's Cavalry Brigade (Egypt) with the 7th and 8th Hussars (Army List link and Gazette appointment) and after May, Russell is in command of the Light Armoured Brigade in the Armoured Division, with his brigade containing the 7th, 8th, and 11th Hussars (link).

Maybe the article needs a background section to explain the cav presence in the Middle East and the existing brigade being attached to the newly forming armoured formation in 1938, and then the name change in 1939?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 01:09, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tracing the COs back, it would seem that the Cairo/Cav Bde (Egypt) stems from the 11th Cavalry Brigade (British Indian Army)?EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 02:36, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
