Sakhalin island
[edit]The 50th parallel divided the island for 40 years. The situation in the island before and after the division was exactly the same: full Russian control before the division and full Soviet control after the division. Banana Republic (talk) 16:32, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
- If you edit Wikipedia, you should also use it: [1]. History does not start from 1905. At a minimum, it was under non-Russian rule for centuries, from Yuan Dynasty in 1308 onwards. Your claim that this was "Russian territory prior to 1905" is thus false. The Russians never controlled Sakhalin until 1853 [2]. You should avoid political issues and simply write neutral, minimum non-controversial statements in the text. Leave politics out of the 50th parallel north.--3E1I5S8B9RF7 (talk) 17:16, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
- This is an article about the 50th parallel line, not the history of Sakhalin island. The history of Sakhalin island prior to 1905 is irrelevant to the 50th parallel line. I suppose for additional preciseness we could introduce the topic with the sentence "From 1853 until 1905 Russia controlled Sakhalin island". Hopefully that would be OK with you.
- The point of the paragraph is to say that between 1905 and 1945 the 50th parallel line split the island between Russia/Soviet Union and Japan, and in 1945 the island reverted to being full Russian/Soviet control, which is what it was prior to 1905. Banana Republic (talk) 17:41, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
- Exactly, the history of Sakhalin is irrelevant for this topic. The wording is better now. Though, frankly, maybe even that is unnecessary, and instead just a sentence saying that the 50th parallel north goes through Sakhalin, where from 1905 and 1945 it was divided between Russia and Japan, would suffice.--3E1I5S8B9RF7 (talk) 08:55, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
- I think it's good to describe how and why the island changed from being all Russian to divided between Russia/Soviet Union and Japan. It wasn't as if the Russians, out of the goodness of their hearts, gave the Japanese control over half the island, and then the Japanese decided that they are no longer interested in the southern half of the island. - I should add that since the Treaty of Portsmouth defined the 50th parallel as the dividing line between Russian and Japanese control of the island, it has to be included in the article. For context, the treaty was signed to conclude the Russo-Japanese War, so the war needs to be mentioned as well. Banana Republic (talk) 22:53, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
