Comment

[edit]

This is the English wiki page for the 24th Waffen Mountain Division of SS. Therefore the name should be in English instead of German. Just like all the other Division pages. --Wis (talk) 14:37, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The concept of the unit being decreased from a battalion to a brigade seems odd, given that a brigade is generally accepted to be larger than a battalion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by QuiltedBunny (talkcontribs) 17:18, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Language

[edit]

Above, it says the article is in Australian English?

The page has the feel of one based on a German-language article. Why else would the German-form of placenames be used? e.g. Karfreit for Kobarid. Nedrutland (talk) 07:56, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is partly based on a German-language source, and the source uses those versions of place names. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:42, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have now altered placenames to their accepted current form with the German version in brackets. Nedrutland (talk) 09:19, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Why Waffen-SS and not Waffen-SS? The current format violates WP:EASTEREGG. jnestorius(talk) 14:24, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I see this in Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/24th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Karstjäger/archive1 ...
MOS:FOREIGN states that non-loanwords are italicised as foreign words not yet in everyday use in non-specialized English. There was no consensus when discuss at MILHIST Talk, so I have applied the suggested MOS rule of thumb (using the Merriam-Webster dictionary), which does not list Waffen, but does list SS. Thus Waffen is italicised and SS is not.
...which explains why Waffen-SS and not Waffen-SS or Waffen-SS but does not explain the odd placement of the Wikilink. Although adiditionally the Waffen-SS article does not adopt the same italics convention. jnestorius(talk) 14:29, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And indeed the Wikipedia:Today's featured article/August 15, 2016 blurb uses Waffen-SS. jnestorius(talk) 14:31, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think the rationale above explains the italicisation (based on Waffen not being in the dictionary), so it should be Waffen-SS. I can't speak for the Waffen-SS article, although I think I've been consistent on the four FAs on Balkan Waffen-SS divisions I've done (13, 21, 23 and this one, plus a couple of bio articles). I might start a centralised discussion to get a community consensus. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 00:19, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

War crimes

[edit]

The Axis History Factbook notes that "This unit was involved in several war crimes against partisans and civilans including an imfamous beheading of two captured partisans. The anti-partisan war in Italy was brutal on both sides and in February 1944 15 members of the SS-Karstwehr-Batillon who had been captured by the partisans near Cividale were tortured and killed." It also provides several books where one would imagine such information is sourced from.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 18:41, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Axishistory is hardly a reliable source, and the same goes for several of the sources mentioned on that page, though I'll see if I can access copies of the ones that might be reliable. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 23:05, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not mainly anti-partisan. Mainly anti-civilian... "After the war the SS organisation as a whole was held to be a criminal organization by the post-war German government, due to evidence that it was responsible for war crimes."1 24th escaped to Latin America. -Yohananw (talk) 23:41, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

URFA/2020 Notes

[edit]
As I've noted elsewhere, that is a confusing bit of guidance and needs examples. I use the rule of thumb in MOS:FOREIGNITALICS. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 00:36, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Making the topic the focus

[edit]

The first two sentences read oddly because they are not focused on the unit i.e. the article topic. To correct this, one could change: 'The 24th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Karstjäger was a German mountain infantry division of the Waffen-SS, the armed wing of the German Nazi Party that served alongside but was never formally part of the Wehrmacht during World War II. At the post-war Nuremberg trials, the Waffen-SS was declared to be a criminal organisation due to its major involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity.' to 'The 24th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Karstjäger was a German mountain infantry division of the Waffen-SS. As with other units of this armed wing of the German Nazi Party, it served alongside but was never formally part of the Wehrmacht during World War II. In common with other such units, it was involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity and the Waffen-SS as a whole was declared to be a criminal organisation at the post-war Nuremberg trials.'
