Untitled 2005 comment[edit]

We have a long-standing tradition of removing any Nth anniversaries (tenth, fiftieth, hundredth, etc.) from year pages. General consensus so far is that these anniversaries are more clutter than content. The only possible exception is if something encyclopedic happens during an observation of the anniversary. - jredmond 15:14, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I rewrote the entire section as per your concerns. I feel 100th anniversary of WWII is noteworthy as there are already ceremonies being planned in Japan and France. I think the current rewrite is a good compromise. -Husnock 15:59, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, not quite... these observations haven't happened yet, and may not happen. And even if they do happen, there's no guarantee that they'll be encyclopedic in 2055 or 2065.
In any case, if we're going to include end-of-WWII anniversaries here, then they'll need to be included on 1995, 2095, 2145, and so on. And 2005 should include hundredth anniversaries of all the entries in 1905, and fiftieth anniversaries of everything in 1955, etc. Actual events could easily become lost among the clutter.
This isn't the first time we've had this discussion on future pages: the sinking of the Titanic keeps winding up on 2012, the World Trade Center collapse keeps winding up on 2011 and 2101, etc. Long story short, the anniversaries get removed, and generally stay removed. - jredmond 16:51, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why are there 2 categories: "Predicted events" and "Predictions"? Can't we merge those two? 85.179.177.96 02:12, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

100th Anniversary of World War II[edit]

Sorry you feel that way. Ceremonies for the 100th anniversary of World War II are being planned by at least four countries (US, UK, Japan, and France) and countless veterans groups (VFW, American Legion, etc) have the date marked as well. I feel this a little bit different than adding 100 to every event in Wikipedia. As far as it may not happen, that could apply to any and all entries on the future pages. In short, I understand that concern about adding anniversary dates to all year entries, but this is a special case considering the event of the anniversary and the major international attention it is sure to draw. I think more people need to comment before any further reversions are made. -Husnock 17:22, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It seems, nobody in wikipedia cares. There are worse things, though. -- 119.94.194.140 (talk) 00:49, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Singularity of 2045[edit]

This event will result in the human race becoming either 1) immortal and omniscient, or 2) extinct. Das baz, aka Erudil 18:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I thought it was supposed to be 2029? In any case, it's probably notable if the futurist in question is, himself, a noted expert, and you can find the specific source. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 19:08, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Ray Kurzweil is indeed a noted expert, and the specific source for his theory is noted in the article. Oh, and there is more on the subject in the April 2009 Scientific Ammerican. Das Baz, aka Erudil 20:07, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Universal Century[edit]

Should there be something about the beginning of the Universal Century under the fiction section? It started around 2045. Mes tex (talk) 16:47, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article says "after 2045". I don't think that would make it appropriate for this article. Perhaps 2040s, if that can be documented. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 17:09, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
