Sortable Tables

[edit]

I think the year summary all matches table should be sortable before it lets a user sort her matches by opponent and rankings and makes it more accessible, plus all the other tables in the article seems to be sortable. LiamKorda 13:41, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since there is no reply, I am gonna just do it. LiamKorda 10:12, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This has never been implemented before and would only make the table less accessible while sorting. The only thing this can contribute is loads of duplicate tournament info listed under the "Tournament" column. If you wish to sorting by oppoenent ranking, I recommend to create a customized table like this. Unnamelessness (talk) 11:39, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will try out something to do their but you said, "this has never been implemented before...", I want to say that just because it has never been done before doesn't mean we shouldn't try something new. This is second time my attempt to do something like this have been reverted. I previously added more color and simpler Win/Loss template, but some user called it that I have made a mess when it was not. I think wikipedia is always evolving and we shouldn't struck down anything just because it was never done before. Thanks. LiamKorda 08:37, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Which is why we end up here for a discussion. WP:BRD. Unnamelessness (talk) 10:53, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, people take time to reply. To expect a reply less than 24 hours after a post is ridiculous. You also don't put sortability into small tables with only a couple of entries. Sorting is there for large long tables. Her doubles and mixed doubles have one tournament... sorting would be a waste of time. And the singles schedule, the only column that could use sorting would be opponent. It's a long enough table that some readers would find it useful... but by last name like all other wikipedia tables. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:25, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry that I didn't waited 24 hours before doing but I thought since the season is over and it is not that much visited page and thought no one will reply to this so I justed followed WP:JUSTDOIT and did the edit. But, I will try to be more patient next time. Thanks. LiamKorda 08:41, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For me, yes and no. I have no problem with those three columns usually being sortable, but the opponent sortability is 100% useless as is. It sorts by nationality not the player's last name. That needs special coding. I think instead of {{flagicon|FRA}} {{sortname|Caroline|Garcia}} it needs to be {{sort|Garcia.|{{flagicon|FRA}} [[Caroline Garcia]]}} . Also, in this case, why would we need sorting in the win/loss column? There is only one loss so sorting is pretty meaningless. It needs a purpose. But others need to agree before implementing. Neither of the provided proposal answered my concern. The table still generates multiple duplucate tournament info listed under the "Tournament" column while sorting. Plus, it could not reset to the default layout. You have to alternatively perform a page refresh to reset it. Unnamelessness (talk) 10:56, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is no way to sort without generating multiple tournament listings. That's the nature of sorting by name in this table. What's kind of lousy is it won't go back to normal on the third click. But then, no one has to sort by those columns. They only sort when they want to see who was played alphabetically instead of chronologically. I have no idea why they'd want to sort that way but if some do, and they want to mess up the table to the point of a refresh, then that's on them. No one else will be affected. The question is how many actually would want to sort that way for us to change the table? Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:27, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So this table is not suitable to be sortable, and need to customize another one. Unnamelessness (talk) 03:17, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That is probably the best outcome. Plus, sorting by opponent in this table accomplishes one thing... their record against each player this season. And guess what... we already have that list here. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:25, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why is there even a need for this type of table? If you want to see the H2H against a particular player in a given year, there are multiple sites where you can see that such as this, this, this and this. If you want to sort the opponents by rank, you can do this on Tennis Abstract by just clicking on "vRk" button. The table you are suggesting is a mess and so much of a hassle. ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸ ਆਫ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬ (PrinceofPunjab | ਗੱਲਬਾਤ) 14:11, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
