Vermont hasn't clinched no. 1 seed

[edit]

Vermont has clinched a share of the regular-season title but has not clinched the no. 1 seed.

Vermont is 13–1, and UMass Lowell is 11–3. Vermont's two remaining games are at home against UMass Lowell and at New Hampshire. If Vermont loses those two games, they will have split their season series with UMass Lowell, New Hampshire and NJIT and swept their other five season series. UMass Lowell's two remaining games are at Vermont and at Maine. If UMass Lowell wins those two games, they will have split their season series with Vermont, New Hampshire and NJIT.

Thus, if the two teams finish 13–3, they will have split their head-to-head matchups, and each team will have identical records versus every other conference opponent, i.e. sweeps against Bryant, UMBC, Binghamton, Maine and Albany and splits against New Hampshire and NJIT. Therefore, the order in which the other seven teams in the conference finish will not matter, since Vermont and UMass Lowell have identical records against all of them.

The next step of the tiebreaker is road record in conference games. Vermont is currently 6–1, and a loss at New Hampshire would make them 6–2. UMass Lowell is currently 5–1, and wins at Vermont and New Hampshire would make them 7–1. Thus, UMass Lowell wins the tiebreaker with a better road record.
