Plural v. singular

[edit]

@Number 57: It's U.S. convention to use a plural, is it not?

While the examples used in WP:NC-GAL are singular, there is nothing mandating the singular usage. Nevermore27 (talk) 02:37, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I know you will (rightly) point to this line: 'For individual elections and referendums, use the format "Demonym type election/referendum, date"' but IMO that's descriptive, not proscriptive. Bottom line, there is no consensus to change the entire way we do things over here on this side of Elections Wiki, and it ain't broke, so there's no reason to fix it. No, it's not convention for state elections, the vast majority of which are at the correct title (which is mandated by our naming guideline). And even if they were at the wrong title, that wouldn't make it ok – the US is not a special case amongst the 200+ countries in the world that it gets to ignore the agreed naming format. By all means propose a change to the guideline, but I think you'll be hard pressed to justify this exceptionalism. (also, the gubernatorial election title listed above is correct as it refers to the election of multiple governorships). Number 57 07:26, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Number 57: Then why not insist that the national House and Senate elections pages change as well? It seems like you're only attempting to impose your will on these lower-profile pages because you're less likely to be challenged. I'm not saying the U.S. is special, only that this is the way we've done things for a while, uncontested, and there's no real reason to change it. And no, singular is not mandated, nor is plural banned. Nevermore27 (talk) 17:07, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's on my long-term to do list, but as it's dozens of pages in one go, it'll be a bigger thing to sort out. At the moment I'm concentrating on the RfC currently at WP:NC-GAL and the potential outcomes of that (ie compiling all the articles that will need renaming).
The guideline doesn't ban using the word aardvark from being included in the article title either, so the argument that the plural is not banned doesn't hold any water. The guideline is clear. Number 57 17:35, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, moving onto a more productive discussion, I'm amazed by how poor our coverage of state elections is; coverage of county and district councils in the UK is far more comprehensive, despite them being considerably smaller than states (in most cases) and vastly more in number. For several states there are no state election articles at all. Any idea why the coverage is so sparse? Number 57 17:36, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, though I'm doing my best to help flesh them out. Nevermore27 (talk) 18:41, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
