Johnny Valiant

[edit]

He has received a lot of coverage, yet people keep removing him cause he’s apparently isn’t internationally notable. I disagree with them. JoeyRuss (talk) 10:57, 6 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Johnny Valiant? Not internationally notable. Probably wouldn't meet the standards for 2018 in the United States. Perhaps 2018 in WWE or 2018 in television? — Arthur Rubin (talk) 14:44, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
"... in WWE" is not a subarticle of "... in sports", so I don't know exactly where yyyy in WWE should go. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 14:47, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Arthur Rubin: There's no such thing as 2018 in WWE on Wikipedia. However, there's a 2018 in professional wrestling. Just thought I might let you know so that in future you would know where to find these kind of articles. The Optimistic One (talk) 18:26, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

18/19

[edit]

Hi,

I wonder if that wikipedia should indicate 2018 as the 19th year of the 21st century & 3rd millennium as 2000 is the 1st year & not 2001 138.75.150.238 (talk) 13:50, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Because nothing you wrote is correct. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:19, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

TotalBiscuit

[edit]

On the 2017 article it was agreed to add Youtube personality Angry Grandpa to the list of deaths as his real name (Charles Green) rather than as his Youtube identity (see HERE). This precedent indicates that TotalBiscuit should instead be credited as John Bain. -- Millionsandbillions (talk) 18:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

National School Walkout Day

[edit]

It was run by the Brady Bunch, and there were a number of students and teachers who opposed the walkout and were punished. This "spontaneous" protest was not very widespread. The March for Our Lives demonstrations were much more significant, although there were counter-protests there, as well. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:34, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Danny Kirwan was an integral member of Fleetwood Mac, appearing on four of their studio albums and was a member of one of two line-ups generally considered to be their classic. He is the primary member responsible for the band moving away from their blues rock roots and along with Bob Welch and Christine McVie transitioned the band to a more soft rock direction - laying the groundwork for the Lindsey Buckingham/Stevie Nicks era stuff. Kirwan is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; his guitar work and role in the band has been acclaimed. At the very least given his merits Kirwan’s image is deserving to be put up on this page; certainly more so than a rapper who wasn’t all that well known outside of the unusual circumstances of his passing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thescrubbythug (talkcontribs) 19:59, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I am agnostic in the Kirwan v. XXX thing. I switched them because I've noticed mini-edit wars about photo selections in these year articles for a long time, assumed this was one of them, and reverted it back to what it had been. Should there be guidelines as to which photos appear in the deaths sections of these articles? Doc StrangeMailboxLogbook 22:44, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There should be guidelines. However, there are editors who disagree, preventing guidelines as to which deaths should appear from being adopted. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 18:13, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but this has been going on for much longer than any change in the listing guidelines. Before then, it was between individuals who had met those criteria. I think it would be much more palatable to create guidelines as to who appears in the photographs than determining who actually gets listed here. Pretty much since the photos have been introduced into these articles, they've pretty much been included on the whim of whoever adds them. This has generally resorted in the over-appearance of entertainers (and to a lesser extent, politicians) in the photo selection over many other fields. Heat wave and drought

True. I thought the North American ones were mostly non-notable. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 00:05, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Anonymous from the 21st century: Notable? There is a notability tag on the article, and I can see little that indicates notability in the article. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 16:44, 18 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Robin Leach

[edit]

Lately, Rich8605 has added Robin Leach to the death section three times in under twenty-four hours and I kept telling him that’s he not notable and then I gave him a warning for edit warring. So, should we keep Leach out? I know WP:RY is dead but I think this can lead to conclusion to see what others think rather than one person thinking on their own. Gar (talk) 00:52, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Gar (talk) 21:06, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Exclude — He had immense notability mainly in the world of pop culture for being the star attraction of the Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, as well as being the subject of cultural references and cameos in film, reality, and game shows over the years when his showmanship days were over. He was known more exclusively to the English-speaking audience in the US and in regions of Europe and other small parts of the world that had distribution to subtitles to said television series, but nothing more. I'll change my vote if only more evident stuff are presented in this Talk page, but for now I'll stand for exclusion. —*riot_iori* ❰talk❱ 01:14, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Exclude. (Invited) Almost qualifies for WP:B..1E. Having obits in multiple countries doesn't mean he isn't known only for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 03:18, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What reason is there not to include a picture of America's leading comedy playwright?Radiohist (talk) 09:33, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of space. Although it seems to fit now, I'd appreciate if you didn't engage in edit-warring and resolved the issue on the talk page before reverting the next time. Secondly, "fame" isn't the only criterion for including the picture. There are too many American entertainers (some of whom are largely unknown outside the USA) featured, causing severe imbalance. — Yerpo Eh? 09:45, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Neil Simon doesn't fit into the category of "some of whom are largely unknown outside the USA". His plays are performed throughout the European Union, Latin America, Asia....I think that qualifies him for a picture.Radiohist (talk) 09:49, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yerpo "There are too many American entertainers" is your subjective opinion which doesn't make much sense in an encyclopedic environment. There are 51 pictures and 19 of them are American people. I see nothing wrong with that. Furthermore, I think Chuck McCann, who once had his picture in the 2018 section, was removed.Radiohist (talk) 09:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
American entertainers are grossly overrepresented on year pages. It may reflect tabloid coverage, but I dearly hope there's more to life than that. If that's subjective, so be it. But I would like to see one other encyclopedia where this problem is so acute. — Yerpo Eh? 14:03, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yerpo Yours are the petty comments of someone who hates the theatrical profession and America. Please take your frustrations elsewhere. I think you are just taking out spite on a man who doesn't deserve it. Neil Simon's work is internationally known and praised. The fact that each one of his plays - The Odd Couple, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Prisoner of Fifth Avenue, The Gingerbread Lady, Barefoot in the Park, The Sunshine Boys and The Cactus Flower - is being performed in 75 countries outside of America proves his success. American entertainers are just much more talented and relevant than entertainers from other countries.Radiohist (talk) 15:24, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yerpo Out of the 19 pictures of American people (out of 51) only 7 (counting sports personality Sammartino) are of American entertainers. Your claims are completely unfounded and false.Radiohist (talk) 15:34, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hohoho, now I hate America?! LOL! Sorry, but your ridiculous personal attacks are below the level of conversation expected on a Wikipedia talk page. Please take your empty pride elsewhere. — Yerpo Eh? 16:21, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How can they be personal attacks, I don't even know you? But, yes, I did overreact a bit and I apologize. However, 19 Americans out of 51 and 7 of them entertainment figures - that's pretty reasonable.Radiohist (talk) 16:44, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm (surprisingly) with Yerpo here. This is "English language" Wikipedia, not "American" Wikipedia. So, having more than 1/3 as Americans is already too much. Perhaps suggest someone you could switch out. In the meantime, yes, stating that someone's comments as "petty" and who "hates" does constitute a personal attack here on Wikipedia, so pack it in. Having said all of that, your final note, American entertainers are just much more talented and relevant than entertainers from other countries. is probably just about all we need to read to understand where you're coming from. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:12, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I apologized for my remarks. I shouldn't have overreacted. My words were not a personal attack in any way. No matter how different our opinions may be, they are still highly subjective. There are 51 pictures and only 19 of them are of American people. That doesn't constitute a problem or bias in any way. The users who have composed this list are doing are marvelous job. This discussion was started to see if there are any arguments whether Neil Simon (American by birth, World-Renowned by work) doesn't deserves his photo to be displayed. No arguments were given to defend that position. It's time to put an end to this discussion.Radiohist (talk) 18:44, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Americans comprise ~4% of the world’s population but are ~37% of those pictured here. That’s systemic bias, and that is a problem. -- irn (talk) 19:12, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • On the space issue, it seems to render just fine on my laptop, but it may render differently on other laptops. I was going through the last few months and Big Van Vader is the person I would remove to preserve space for Simon. pbp 20:40, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Except that FYI Big Van Vader died on June and the subject we're talking about (Neil Simon) died on the month of August. With only space for one, it seems clear that Charles Aznavour is the choice over Scott Wilson (actor), although one could make a case for Đỗ Mười or Leon M. Lederman. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 00:17, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Internationally notable

[edit]

In spite of efforts to include anyone mentioned in a Wikipedia article in the deaths section, there is still consensus that the person must be internationally notable, and must generally have a Wikipedia article. Some editors are adding people whose deaths were noticed in a Wikipedia article. Until consensus is changed, it seems pointy, at best, to add dozens of individuals. Furthermore, it seems likely that each entry will eventually need a reference, as is now required in WP:DOY articles. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 00:11, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed, but I have just warned Alsorian97 to stop removing people because he claims that "The Wikipedia rules say that to add people to these lists they must have at least 9 pages in Wikipedia that are not in English". As I've pointed out on his talk page, people can be clearly internationally notable without that - many people are notable in the Anglosphere, which covers dozens of countries, without necessarily being so elsewhere. The one he removed today, Daryl Dragon, has obituaries in the NYT, Rolling Stone, the BBC, and major newspapers in Canada, Japan, Australia, South Africa without even looking for non-English sources. Black Kite (talk) 23:48, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
    • I didn't think Daryl was even notable in the US, but I agree that "9 pages" is no longer the guideline. (I was going to warn Alsorian97 this evening (PST = UTC-0800) as well, but it seems he's already been blocked....) On the other hand, I do not think that obituaries in multiple countries are adequate. The original guideline which the "9 pages" was a proxy for the person's life being internationally notable — obituaries are indications that the person's death was internationally notable. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 06:29, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
      • Depends. If you've got a few scattered obituaries here and there, then, yes. If it's the manner of the person's death - not their life achievements - that's the focus of the obituary, then also, yes. But when you've got them in a very large number of countries, and in the top level of those countries' news agencies, then you have to think this is someone who has international notability during their life (sources such as those mentioned do not print obituaries for people without their life achievements to talk about!) . Actually, this quite often happens with musicians who are the foci of a band, where there is an article for them and an article for their band. (Incidentally, Captain & Tenille have multiple language versions, a portal and a template!) Black Kite (talk) 20:58, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Globalization and gender bias

Of the 100 images in the deaths section, 43 are of US figures. Females are noticeably under-represented. Perhaps User:Matt Campbell would like to address this issue. Deb (talk) 08:32, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Missing June deaths picture

[edit]

As i was looking through june deaths i thought it was weird that xxxtentacion didn't have a picture for june deaths, but i assumed that the older famous celebrities have some type of senority so their pics go first. That was until curiosity hit me and i decided to check other celebs. Then i found that lil peep(a young artist), kim jong hyun(another young artist), and even charles manson(a very controversial person) have pics for when they died. So can xxxtentacion get a pic for june? Seeing as his death was arguably the most known in june, let alone the year 2018. Zackattack996 (talk) 13:33, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Michael

[edit]

Why is Hurricane Michael listed here while Hurricane Sandy is not listed in the 2012 article. Michael had extremely low impact compared to Sandy which had a huge impact and received immense international coverage. Just because Michael is category 5 it is more notable than Sandy? Also I have noticed that a lot of important events were omitted in 2012 because of the then recent years policy 2002-2017, but 2018, 2019, 2020 are flooded with events that would be considered not notable had the policy still been in effect. There is a serious issue of Wikipedia:Recentism in this article, and I think a recentism tag should be placed. Dilbaggg (talk) 15:51, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think of the new changes? Also, if there's anyone that you felt should be reinstated, please let me known. The Optimistic One (talk) 11:28, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Looks okay to me. Anyone has the option to add a citation if they spot anything that needs to go back in. Deb (talk) 11:35, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

In the section of the listed deaths of the year 2018, I'm upset to find that a favorite actor, Bill Daily, who played two of the most popular and beloved TV characters of all time, did not have the occasion of his passing at age 91 retained on this page for the year, which is locked from my being able to introduce what I feel is an appropriate edit, even though his date of death is still listed on more specialized pages. As I suspect his removal may have been unintentional, I would argue his mention is warranted here for the significance of his contribution to television comedy. I request the following entry be restored to the correct location:

September 4 - Bill Daily, actor and comedian (b. 1927) Saltrewiss (talk) 03:29, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done. He's at the main article, Deaths in September 2018.
He's also on 2018 in the United States. He's not on this article because he was a domestic figure. Being internationally notable is required to be on main year articles. Jim Michael (talk) 22:10, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm familiar with his work on I Dream of Jeannie, but Oppose inclusion - not a major, internationally notable actor. TheScrubby (talk) 10:14, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Date format

[edit]

I would also like to suggest changing the date format of this article to the DMY format (e.g. 6 June 2020 as opposed to June 6, 2020). The DMY format seems more international and more suitable for a "global" article like. Also DMY simply makes more sense as it goes from smallest to highest.

At the village pump, I've presented a proposal to establish a standard to use DMY in general for all articles about "generic" years. The discussion got kind of messy however, and I'll propaly restart it at some point. In the meantime, I would like it to create consensus about changing it for specifically this and all other nine articles about the 2010s--Marginataen (talk) 16:11, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
