"Would" is the past tense of "Will"

[edit]

In the past there has been some discussion about the practice of using "would" when writing articles. However, nobody has really explained to me why this is poor grammar. While Wikipedia articles should generally be written in the present tense, using the word "would" is not the way to do it. "Would" is the past tense of the verb "will".[1] In the context of this Wikipedia article the word "would", and particularly the phrase "would be", is being used to talk about past events. That means the phrase "would be" can be simplified to "was" because the Wikipedia article is talking about a past event, which is one of the circumstances when past tense is used in Wikipedia articles. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 18:05, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
