4 billion?

This page, citing the London Olympics page, says that the closing ceremony will have an estimated global audience of 4 billion. I know that this is an "official" number, but it's completely ridiculous. There are only 7 billion people in the world, and large percentage of them don't have access to television or internet (to say nothing of electricity or running water).

The opening ceremony was viewed by only 900 million people. Unless there is another source to corroborate the 4 billion estimation for the closing ceremony I think it should be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Proprius (talk • contribs) 06:16, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Done. I raised the same point in talk on the Opening Ceremony. The 4 billion figure as an 'actual' for the opening ceremony appeared in one BBC report and has since spread to other media, but as you say this was always a fanciful nonsense figure. In Canada, where TV ownership is almost universal, the live show was in the daytime, and with its historic links to the UK, viewing penetration was only 57%. So 4/7 ths of the world is an absurd estimate. The Telegraph today estimates 750 million for the closing ceremony, which sounds about right, so I've edited this into the article IanB2 (talk) 12:34, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Bowie

I'd strongly suggest replacing the long list of Bowie songs (except "Fashion") with a single entry making it clear that only a few seconds of each were played. "Fashion" should of course remain in the current format as it was actually played in its entirety or nearly so, but as it is the list creates the incorrect impression that a short concert's worth of Bowie songs were played, when the reality is that one song was done, preceded by a very short medley of many others. 50.72.196.97 (talk) 06:22, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Queen and Royal Protocol

I heard from a family member that it is Royal protocol that the Queen never closes anything and only turns up to open, thus the reason why she was not present. I could not find any proof of this with a quick google search. Anyone know any more of this? Mishka Shaw (talk) 11:18, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

This is not true. She closed the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002 and called upon the athletes to assemble in Melbourne 2006. I believe she also closed Edinburgh in 1970, but can't find evidence to support that. As I understand it, it was never intended for the Queen to close London 2012, as the official close is done by the President of the IOC and there is no official role for the Head of State of the Host Nation at the Closing Ceremony. The Court Circular shows her as going to Balmoral for the start of her [delayed) annual vacation on August 6th and not returning until August 29th when she will open the Paralympics — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.24.228.120 (talk) 12:12, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

"height of laziness" then why dont you go ahead and find a "perfunctory google search" to add a source. 2. instead of resporting t NPAS one can see that at least content was added almost immediatey after it ended. For who played live. The current list is highly debatable. It's unlikely Madness and the Pet Shop Boys did as they were repeated very soon after (unless the act was recorded live in the stadium and replayed?) fashion and other things

For a large number of small changes, you have two choices. First, you can click Edit at the top, and edit the whole article, thus introducing all of your small changes in one edit. This does have the disadvantage that if it takes you half an hour to make all the edits then save, you might run into an edit conflict with another editor (especially on a busy article like this). The second choice is to click Edit on each section you want to change, and make your small changes one at a time, saving the page after each change.

For either approach, it's a good idea to include an Edit Summary with each edit. Also you should aim to include a reference for each fact that you add (newspapers, magazines, or reputable online news websites are good for this, while blogs, wordpress, facebook, youtube and so on are not - see WP:REFB for further details on how to do it.) Just adding something on the basis that you saw it in the ceremony (even though I saw it too!) is not ideal. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 01:11, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Acrobats, giant octopus

Seems like a section on the acrobats (and some more on the dancers) could be included, not just the music. Also no mention of the giant inflatable octopus and load of other staging bits seem to have been overlooked. finding sources that mention them may be tricky, is the bbc coverage a sufficient source?
